GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Cancer Registrar Training & Education Coordinator is responsible for training on all aspects of abstracting and interpreting medical information as required for final diagnosis coding and staging of cancer incidence and mortality and other related cancer data including patient registration, examination, diagnosis, and treatment information. The Cancer Registrar Training & Education Coordinator also assists the Data Quality Specialist with audits and edits as required. The Cancer Registrar Training & Education Coordinator reports to the Site Manager of Cancer Registry.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education- Diploma in Health Information Management and/or
- Bachelor degree in Health Information Technology
- Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) designation- candidates that do not have this credential at the time of hire will be given two (2) years to obtain it
Experience
- Currently employed as a Cancer Registrar II for a minimum of two (2) consecutive years; OR
- If no such applicant found, three (3) years of cancer registry coding and staging experience within the last five (5) years
Memberships
- Active membership with the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA)
- Active Membership with National Cancer Registrar’s Association (NCRA).
- Ability to code and stage utilizing current oncology systems and standards.
- Thorough knowledge of Collaborative Stage and TNM Staging Systems.
- Thorough knowledge of Eureka, CMS, Ceres and related programs.
- Thorough knowledge of current registry processes and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of edit and audit processes and procedures.
- Proficient in utilizing Microsoft applications- Word and Excel
- Initiative and independent judgment required to solve complex problems.
- Human relations skills required to ensure compliance and promote acceptance through negotiating with staff and/or suppliers where there is a requirement to resolve the conflict or situation.
- Ability to teach and present information to persons over whom the incumbent may have no direct authority.
- Competent in use of a variety of software.
- Accuracy of fine motor movements for typing/data entry is required.
- Communication skills required to develop and present complex information including written documentation and verbal presentations.
- Demonstrates commitment to continuing professional development.
- Demonstrates leadership skills.
- Knowledge and ability to apply privacy and health information acts, regulations and policy.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge of culturally responsive care for First Nations and Métis people.
