Description
Senior Laboratory Technologist performs a variety of laboratory tests and duties in accordance with HRLMP policies and procedures. These include but are not exclusive to the performance of serological testing, review of quality control and coordination of day-to-day operations of Transfusion Medicine.
Responsibilities include but are not exclusive to:
• Scheduling, monitoring workflow, reassigning staff as necessary to meet turnaround times and day to day operational need
• Review of complex antibody investigations; provide direction to MLTs on complex investigations;
• Review of transfusion reactions; provide direction on blood utilization in the day to day operations
• Recognizes unusual results and situations, acts upon them accordingly and effectively communicates finding to staff.
• Operating and maintaining equipment including recognizing and troubleshooting failures, taking corrective action and ensuring proper documentation
• Maintaining all external QA activities within the department and understands the practice and theory of quality control in laboratory medicine. Reviews day to day occurrences and provides guidance as necessary. Monitors and reviews quality and takes necessary action.
- Actively participates in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement
• Designing and coordinating implementation of new methodology/technology and necessary validation as per guidelines
• Acts as a key resource to technical staff, laboratory manager and medical staff on technical operation and theory of testing and results
• Teaching/Overseeing of Residents from a variety of disciplines and MLT students
• Review of and follow up of new MLT training
• Collaborates with clinical areas and vendor partners
• Inventory control and ordering
- Practices and perform TM lab tests and procedures with accuracy and efficiency and prioritizes lab workload to ensure efficiency and timely reporting of results.
- Participates in training and education in accordance with the CMLTO
Registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (CMLTO)
- Preferred: Member of the Canadian Society for Transfusion Medicine and Medical Laboratory Technologist Certification (Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Sciences)
3. Current (minimum 5 years preferred) Transfusion Medicine experience
4. ART-Immunohematology or relevant B.Sc., e.g. Biology or Biochemistry or B. Technology in Health Sciences
- Degree/certificate from a recognized Health Management Program would be an asset
5. Extensive demonstrated knowledge of Transfusion Medicine practices
6. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
7. Excellent communication skills
8. Demonstrated ability to work in and foster a team environment
