The Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre is home to one of Ontario’s largest and most comprehensive Regional Cancer Programs, serving over 2.3 million people. It offers comprehensive services including emergency care, medical and intensive care services, surgery oncology, hematology-oncology, stem cell transplants, orthopedics, arthroplasty, rehabilitation, and diagnostics.

Description of Program/Departments:

 

The Oncology Unit (C3) at the Juravinski site is a specialized inpatient oncology facility delivering comprehensive care for adults with solid tumor malignancies. In this role, you will provide comprehensive care to patients undergoing cancer treatment, including those receiving chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation therapy, as well as caring for palliative care patients and providing symptom management. You will work closely with oncologists, nurses, and other members of a healthcare team to assess and manage the care of oncology patients.

 

The Medical Affairs department is responsible for overseeing administration for Professional Staff at Hamilton Health Sciences. Medical Affairs works closely with the Executive Vice President & Chief Medical Executive, the Senior Medical Officers, and Physician Chiefs. Medical Affairs supports medical workforce recruitment, credentialing, resource planning/allocation, education, and communication within the hospital. The department supports medical learners at McMaster University Faculty of Health Science (FHS), collaborating closely with the leadership of FHS.

Position Summary:

 

The Physician Assistant (PA) will be a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team working under the direct supervision of a hospitalist within the Multispecialty Hospitalist service, abiding by the CPSO standards. 

 

The PA will provide a full range of PA services in accordance with the College of Physician and Surgeons of Ontario's policy on delegation and site-specific medical directives such as:

  • Direct patient care - medical history, physical examinations
  • Liaising with oncologists on admission and requesting consultation & referrals, as needed
  • Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests
  • Prescribing medications 
  • Participating in discharge planning
  • Participating in multidisciplinary rounds
  • Patient and family education
  • Quality improvement projects
  • Participating in family meetings and goals of care discussions with oncologists

     

Schedule Work Hours
Monday to Friday, days
7.5 hour shifts between 8 am and  4:30 pm

Qualifications:

 

1. Graduate of the Canadian or the USA Physician Assistant Program

2. Ability to register with CPSO 

3. Prior experience in an Oncology setting is an asset

4. Demonstrated ability to work alongside an interprofessional health care team

5. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills

6. Demonstrated ability to promote professional development

7. Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills

8. Commitment to providing compassionate, patient and family-centered care and promoting a culture of empathy and respect 

9. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem-solving, organization and prioritization
