Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Clinical Operations, supports established diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular radiography procedures in the Cardiac Catheterization labs, Cardiac Procedure Room, and Electrophysiology labs under the direction of Physician/Cardiologists. Supervises other Cardiovascular Technologists who also perform that work. Serves as the clinical resource in collaboration with the Patient Care Coordinator, overseeing the quality of technical work performed. In collaboration with the leadership team, coordinates the daily technical and staffing activities of assigned area, participates in recruitment, identifies and makes recommendations regarding staffing needs, participates in or makes hiring decisions, coaches and orientates team members. Participates in the planning and coordination of the designated service, practice standards, goals and objectives in conjunction with designated management and other team members. In partnership with the PCC and CNE, coordinates practicum placements and orientation for cardiovascular technologists. Develops procedures and provides guidance to designated staff. The Supervisor also performs the same duties as Cardiovascular Technologists.


Responsibilities


  1. Supervises Cardiovascular Technologist(s) performing procedures in the Catheterization Labs, Cardiac Procedure Room, and Electrophysiology Labs, overseeing/providing training and orientation, and providing input into, performance reviews.
  2. Oversees the day to day activities of the designated areas. Provides input and recommendations to the Manager, Clinical Operations regarding equipment, supplies and staffing requirements. Updates and manages flowsheets, coordinating staffing assignments in collaboration with the PCC. Reports problems on issues such as staff performance, equipment malfunctions and workflow issues to the Manager.
  3. Collaborates on development of protocols and procedures and implements new and revised procedures. Collaborates with various departments to enrich and advance various processes through the effective use of resources by developing standards, conducting investigations and audits and monitoring work procedures. Monitors equipment performance and coordinates repairs with vendors as necessary. Collaborates with vendors as required for updates and information necessary for the department. Participates as a department representative and clinical expert in meetings as required for the site, redevelopment, Cardiac Services BC (CSBC), and health authority, as directed by Manager, Clinical Operations.
  4. Oversees the data input into the Provincial Cardiac Registry in collaboration with the regional triage coordinator. Carries out necessary investigations, completes corrections to orders/procedures, and supports reconciliation alongside the triage coordinator to ensure accurate submission to CSBC.
  5. Performs diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures in the cardiac and vascular catheterization labs and designated areas under the direction of Physician/Cardiologists by performing duties such as:
    • Preparing patient for procedure by applying electrodes and shave prep if necessary.
    • Gathering patient information/history from patient and Meditech EMR, MUSE and the provincial Cardiac Registry enters orders in Meditech; prepares information for the patient chart.
    • Setting up, calibrating, monitoring and analyzing the patient’s ECG & hemodynamics during the various procedures; conveys vital information and any changes to the physician.
    • Entering data and preparing reports, with analysis of recorded hemodynamics including ejection fraction, coronary disease, Resistances and calculation of valve gradient and area.
    • Setting up, maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting a variety of equipment: physiological data monitoring system, ACT machine, FICK machine, defibrillator.
    • Preparing related documentation for STEMI cases.
    • Assisting in pulling supplies for cases; setting up procedural trays using sterile technique; prepping of patients as required.
    • Under the direction of the physician - participates in defibrillating, external pacing and occasional cardioversion and CPR as required.
  6. Performs daily start-up and quality control procedures of the cardiovascular imaging equipment including the cardiac Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS} by following established procedures.
  7. Prepares the work area for each procedure by setting up accessory equipment such as contrast media injector, OCT, IVUS, FFR, and ICE, in conjunction with the Registered Nurse. Orientates equipment users to ensure proper operating and safety procedures.
  8. Participates and collaborates in research and/or trial projects.
  9. Communicates with patients, physicians and staff on topics such as explaining procedures, consent, allergies, etc.
  10. Inputs, updates and annotates patient and procedural data by entering patient ID, supplies utilized, image sequence and procedures performed into the digital imaging system.
  11. Ensures digital images and sequences acquired during radiographic, cardiac and vascular procedures are properly transferred by checking the cardiac Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS).
  12. Provides instruction regarding procedures, equipment and techniques to staff trainees, student technologists and other staff as required.
  13. Participates in the quality control of, and troubleshoots and reports any equipment malfunctions to the Manager, Clinical Operations or service engineer.
  14. Participates in staff meetings and assists with the updating of procedure manuals.
  15. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training & Experience
Diploma in Cardiology Technology or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Advanced Certificate in Cardiovascular Technology. Five (5) years’ recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Eligible for registration with the Canadian Association of Cardiology Pulmonary Technologists (CACPT) and /or CCI RCIS (Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist) credential.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of organization policies, procedures and standards of care, including practice of safe work procedures with modality equipment.
  • Broad knowledge of equipment and supplies utilized in a Catheterization Lab.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop procedure protocols and manuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Knowledge principles of purchasing and inventory management.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
  • Demonstrated computer skills.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of all associated programs and software used by cardiovascular technologists.
