Detailed Overview
Under the general direction of the Chief, Respiratory Therapy, is responsible for performing inpatient and outpatient pulmonary function procedures, keeping records, and maintaining pulmonary function equipment and quality assurance standards according to Lab Accreditation requirements.
Responsibilities
- Performs pulmonary function procedures including spirometry, lung volume determination, diffusion capacity, inhalation challenges, arterial blood punctures, oximetry with exercise, overnight oximetry and other diagnostic testing that may be assigned.
- Completes and files testing documents and records.
- Monitors pulmonary function equipment ensuring calibration and quality checks are performed, arranging maintenance and repair as required.
- Provides related orientation and in-service training for department.
- Participates in the development, revision, and communication of standards, procedures, and protocols, as required. Participates in selected respiratory research activities; facilitates changes in respiratory practice in accordance with standards, procedures, protocols and research.
- Participates in the evaluation, selection and implementation of new equipment or procedures in collaboration with the Chief, Respiratory Therapy.
- Assists in the development of quality assurance programs by helping coordinate the standards of the Diagnostic Accreditation Program with standards and procedures of the department. Participates in implementing new procedures, updating current procedures, performing quality control conducting audits, and/or monitoring services.
- Participates in the selection and performance evaluation of employees, in collaboration with the Chief, Respiratory Therapy.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Education and Experience
Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program. Successful completion of the Canadian Board of Respiratory Care credentialing exam. Eligible for membership with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) and British Columbia Society of Respiratory Therapists (BCSRT). Current and maintain a current "Professional Level C" CPR certification. One (1) year recent experience with pulmonary function procedures.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to teach, related respiratory skills.
- Ability to operate related equipment, and in-service staff on new equipment.
- Ability to be self-directed and organize work.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
