Detailed Overview

Under the direction of the Recreation Therapist, plans, develops, implements and evaluates recreation and social programs to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, intellectual and spiritual needs of the clients for the designated program.
Responsibilities


  1. Plans, implements and evaluates a therapeutic recreation program involving individual and group activities such as arts and crafts, sports, music, mental aerobics, woodworking, cooking, gardening and exercises to meet the client's social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs and interests.
  2. Prepares food items with residents by counting, weighing and/or measuring ingredients, mixing beverage and food items and assembling food items.  Portions out and serves food and beverages.
  3. Prepares for and accompanies residents on community outings by performing duties such as ensuring residents have appropriate clothing, necessary equipment, and funds for activities.
  4. Drives residents to and from outings.  Operates passenger transportation vehicle.
  5. Prepares a calendar of events and instructs participants in the techniques and any required adaptations of related activities to meet the needs of the resident.
  6. Monitors, evaluates and documents resident progress within the recreation program and reports observations such as emotional well being and social behaviour to appropriate staff as required.  Participates in interprofessional team meetings and care conferences as requested and assists Recreation Therapist by identifying and recommending program improvements.
  7. Schedules work assignments and provides direction to designated volunteers during activity programs including demonstrating relevant techniques; determines volunteer resources required and participates in the recruitment, selection and training of volunteers.
  8. Maintains a safe environment for residents, families, volunteers and staff by following established emergency and safety practices and procedures; identifies programs related to resident safety and care standards and informs the Recreation Therapist.
  9. Coordinates inventory of equipment, tools and materials and makes purchase recommendations.
  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Graduation from a recognized recreational program plus one (1) year recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Successful completion of the Food Safe Level 1 Certificate. Valid Class 4 B.C. Driver's License.
