Detailed Overview
Under the direction of the Manager, Clinical Services or designate, performs a variety of clerical, reception, and statistical support functions for the Operating Room area.
Responsibilities
- Performs reception duties such as answering the telephone, receiving/relaying messages, taking messages, answering routine inquiries or referring calls as appropriate.
- Books emergency cases, completes related paperwork and notifies appropriate department, physicians, anaesthetists and staff, as directed.
- Retrieves required charts from the units, attaches documents such as medication orders and laboratory reports, forwards charts for review by anaesthetist and returns charts to appropriate units, in accordance with established procedures.
- Enters information on individual surgery into the information system. Distributes copies of the slates on the unit as established. Provides information on surgery, medical and nursing staff location, as required.
- Participates in the efficient running of the unit by providing information such as patient or surgery location and/or coordinating patient related services such as scheduling for diagnostic procedures, patient transportation, blood bank. Notifies appropriate areas of adjustments to the O.R. slate.
- Performs various related clerical duties such as retrieving daily, monthly and quarterly slates, maintaining/updating manual and computerized records, and compiling statistics.
- Monitors and maintains unit stationery and supply levels, prepares documentation, and requisitions stationery supplies from stores and for STAT supplies from areas such as Pharmacy; completes equipment repair or maintenance orders as directed.
- Orients new staff and students to unit by demonstrating procedures, answering questions, and explaining unit organization and layout.
- Performs clerical duties such as typing, filing and photocopying.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Education and Experience
Grade 12, medical terminology graduation from a recognized Nursing Unit Clerk program, plus one years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to type at 40 w.p.m.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal effectively with others.
- Ability to organize work.
- Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
