KLUANE LAKE SCHOOL (KLS) - Destruction Bay

Home to the Kluane First Nation people, Kluane Lake school is one of 11 Yukon schools that have joined the newly established First Nation School Board (FNSB) in the Yukon. Southern Tutchone is the traditional language of the Kluane First Nation people.

Kluane Lake School is a K-12 school with approximately 11 students. We are actively seeking committed and qualified educators who are dedicated to living in and being an active member of the community and who can adapt well to a remote lifestyle. Our educational professionals value authentic relationships and are committed to working with students, community, administration and the FNSB to make positive, progressive changes to education outcomes for learners of Destruction Bay and Burwash Landing.

Qualifications and Experience

Please clearly demonstrate on your cover letter and resume how you meet the following qualifications and experience:

  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent;
  • Experience working with youth;
  • Post-secondary training in Exceptionalities Worker Program, Special Education, Teacher Education, Early Childhood Education, Social Services or Medical Services would be an asset;
  • Experience integrating self-regulation and social-emotional care practices in the classroom is an asset;
  • Experience working with Indigenous learners in a culturally diverse community is an asset.
  • Experience with restorative justice in a classroom setting would be an asset.
  • Experience working with neuro-diverse students will be an asset.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability

Candidates should have and may be assessed on their:

  • Ability to work effectively with students, teachers and parents;
  • Willingness to learn Southern Tutchone;
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment;
  • Ability to work as a member of a team;
  • Good organizational, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Flexibility to undertake a variety of assignments;
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with parents and caregivers, establishing cooperative and authentic connections to support the best school experience possible;
  • Desire and passion for developing and maintaining strong and respectful relationships and trust with students, their families, school staff, First Nation education workers, and the community as a whole.

Conditions of Employment

  • Security Clearance (Vulnerable Sector Check) prior to starting work;
  • Standard First Aid Certificate or a willingness to complete within 3 months;
  • Completion of the Educational Assistant Module by the end of the 2023/24 school year.

  • If you are a permanent (indeterminate) Educational Assistant in a Yukon school, you will need to seek permission from your Superintendent to apply on this job.
