First Defence Security Ltd. has been protecting people, property and businesses across the Halifax Regional Municipality since 2017. We provide uniformed security guard services to a diverse portfolio of clients, including commercial properties, residential buildings, events, retail locations and institutional sites. Our guards are the face of our company on every site, and we take pride in being known for professionalism, reliability and a calm, respectful presence.

As a Security Guard with First Defence, you will be assigned to client sites throughout HRM to protect people and property, deter and respond to incidents, and deliver a high standard of customer service. Depending on the site, your duties may include access control, patrols, monitoring, incident response and reporting. You will follow site-specific post orders and work closely with our Operations Scheduler and supervisors to ensure every shift runs smoothly. We offer a range of shifts, including days, evenings, overnights and weekends, and we work with you to build a schedule that fits.

• Provide a visible, professional security presence at assigned client sites
• Conduct regular foot and/or mobile patrols of interior and exterior areas, checking for hazards, unsecured doors, suspicious activity and property damage
• Control access to buildings and restricted areas, verifying identification and signing in visitors and contractors
• Monitor CCTV, alarm and access control systems where installed
• Respond promptly and appropriately to incidents, alarms, disturbances, medical emergencies and fire alarms, escalating to police, EHS or fire services as required
• De-escalate conflicts calmly and professionally, using force only as a last resort and within the limits of the law
• Enforce client property rules and issue warnings or trespass notices in accordance with post orders
• Write clear, accurate and timely incident reports, shift logs and daily activity reports
• Provide directions, assistance and courteous customer service to tenants, employees, visitors and the public
• Follow all site-specific post orders, emergency procedures and First Defence policies
• Use Connecteam to clock in and out, review your schedule, receive updates and complete reports
• Maintain a clean, complete uniform and present yourself professionally at all times

Required

• Valid Nova Scotia Security Guard Licence, or eligibility to obtain one before your start date
• Ability to pass a criminal record check
• Legally entitled to work in Canada
• Minimum 18 years of age
• Strong verbal and written English communication skills, including the ability to write clear incident reports
• Reliable, punctual and able to work independently with minimal supervision
• Sound judgment and the ability to stay calm and think clearly under pressure
• Physically able to stand, walk and patrol for extended periods and work in all weather conditions
• Availability to work a mix of days, evenings, overnights, weekends and holidays
• Comfortable using a smartphone for scheduling, timekeeping and reporting

An Asset

• Previous security, law enforcement, military or customer service experience
• Current First Aid and CPR certification
• Valid driver's licence with a clean abstract and access to reliable transportation, particularly for mobile patrol or sites outside the downtown core
• Experience with Connecteam or similar workforce apps
• Additional languages
