Reports To: Maintenance Manager
Location: Extendicare Hillcrest
Position Summary
The Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining the long-term care home, equipment, and grounds in a safe, clean, and operational condition. This role supports resident comfort, safety, infection prevention practices, and compliance with applicable legislation, accreditation standards, and organizational policies.
The Maintenance Worker performs routine maintenance, repairs, preventative maintenance, inspections, and assists with projects while ensuring minimal disruption to residents and staff.
Key Responsibilities
Building Maintenance & Repairs
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to building systems, resident rooms, offices, common areas, and exterior grounds.
- Repair and maintain:
- Doors, locks, windows, walls, ceilings, flooring, and furniture
- Plumbing fixtures and minor plumbing repairs
- Lighting systems and electrical fixtures (within scope)
- HVAC components and filters
- Wheelchairs, lifts, beds, and resident equipment as assigned
- Conduct painting, patching, carpentry, and finishing work.
Preventative Maintenance
- Complete scheduled preventative maintenance programs for equipment and building systems.
- Perform routine inspections and testing of:
- Fire alarm systems
- Emergency lighting
- Generators
- Nurse call systems
- Elevators (coordinate with contractors)
- Mechanical systems
- Maintain preventative maintenance records and documentation.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety requirements, fire code regulations, and long-term care legislation.
- Participate in emergency preparedness activities, fire drills, and evacuation procedures.
- Identify and report hazards, safety concerns, and equipment deficiencies.
- Support accreditation and regulatory inspections.
Grounds & Exterior Maintenance
- Maintain exterior property including:
- Snow and ice removal
- Sidewalk and parking area maintenance
- Landscaping and seasonal upkeep
- Waste and recycling management
- Ensure safe access for residents, visitors, and staff.
Contractor & Vendor Support
- Escort and coordinate external contractors and service providers.
- Monitor contractor work to ensure compliance with home policies and safety procedures.
- Assist with project coordination and renovations.
Resident & Customer Service
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests from residents, families, and staff.
- Maintain professional and respectful interactions with residents and visitors.
- Minimize disruptions during repairs and maintenance activities.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent.
- Building maintenance certification, trade training, or equivalent experience considered an asset.
- Experience in building maintenance, facilities management, healthcare, hospitality, or long-term care preferred.
- Knowledge of:
- Plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and HVAC basics
- Fire and life safety systems
- Occupational Health & Safety requirements
- Infection Prevention and Control practices
- WHMIS certification required.
- Ability to operate maintenance equipment and tools.
- Valid driver’s license may be required.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Basic computer skills for work order systems and documentation.
- Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to stand, bend, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Exposure to indoor and outdoor weather conditions.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to noise, chemicals, mechanical equipment, and cleaning agents.
- May be required to work weekends, evenings, holidays, and participate in on-call rotation.
