Description

Summary of Function:
The Alaqsite’w Gitpu School is seeking an energetic, self-motivated individual to work with our students to develop practical life skills that will support their social emotional growth. The incumbent will be delivering programs under the following topics: communication, social skills, time management, cooking and nutrition, financial literacy, household tasks, problem solving, emotional regulation, decision making and critical thinking, stress management, and positive self-image. The Guidance/Life Skills Teacher will work in collaboration with the Guidance Counselor and Methods & Resource Department and will report to the Vice Principal of Special Education.

Job Duties:

Maintain a professional image and demeanor with all employees, management, executives and visitors at all times.
Organizes the counseling program by assessing needs, setting goals, and formulating a plan of action and program evaluation.
Initiates and coordinates school-wide guidance and counseling activities.
Seeks input from teachers and staff in order to make decisions about the school counseling program.
Advocates for all students.
Assist teachers with the integration of guidance activities into the curriculum/classroom.
Shares appropriate information about students with school personnel, parents and community agencies
Makes referrals of students to school and community programs.
Conducts non-standardized educational assessment according to professional practices.
Create and implement lesson plans that cover a range of life skills.
Teach practical skills through demonstrations, activities, and real-life scenarios.
Evaluate student’s progress and adapt instruction accordingly.
Collaborate with teachers and other professionals.
Support teachers in behavior management.
Will work with students of all grade levels.
Deliver antibullying modules.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Education and/or Provincial Teaching Certificate and/or Certified Counselor
Minimum 2 years of experience in counseling or a related field.
Strong knowledge of Mi’gmaq culture and community.
Must provide a Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check.
Extensive knowledge and understanding of First Nation needs, issues, concerns and aspirations.
