Summary of Function:
The Alaqsite’w Gitpu School is seeking an energetic, self-motivated individual to work with our students to develop practical life skills that will support their social emotional growth. The incumbent will be delivering programs under the following topics: communication, social skills, time management, cooking and nutrition, financial literacy, household tasks, problem solving, emotional regulation, decision making and critical thinking, stress management, and positive self-image. The Guidance/Life Skills Teacher will work in collaboration with the Guidance Counselor and Methods & Resource Department and will report to the Vice Principal of Special Education.

Job Duties:
  • Maintain a professional image and demeanor with all employees, management, executives and visitors at all times.
  • Organizes the counseling program by assessing needs, setting goals, and formulating a plan of action and program evaluation.
  • Initiates and coordinates school-wide guidance and counseling activities.
  • Seeks input from teachers and staff in order to make decisions about the school counseling program.
  • Advocates for all students.
  • Assist teachers with the integration of guidance activities into the curriculum/classroom.
  • Shares appropriate information about students with school personnel, parents and community agencies
  • Makes referrals of students to school and community programs.
  • Conducts non-standardized educational assessment according to professional practices.
  • Create and implement lesson plans that cover a range of life skills.
  • Teach practical skills through demonstrations, activities, and real-life scenarios.
  • Evaluate student’s progress and adapt instruction accordingly.
  • Collaborate with teachers and other professionals.
  • Support teachers in behavior management.
  • Will work with students of all grade levels.
  • Deliver antibullying modules.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education and/or Provincial Teaching Certificate and/or Certified Counselor
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in counseling or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of Mi’gmaq culture and community.
  • Must provide a Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of First Nation needs, issues, concerns and aspirations.
