Job Summary

This is a full time entry level unionized position within the Works unit of the Works Operations group under the City’s Transportation and Works Department. Duties comprise of labour intensive activities and use of hand tools, equipment and trucks related to road and storm water related infrastructure year round throughout the City during regular and after hours in various weather and challenging environments.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Activities include (but are not limited to) debris and illegal signage removal; asphalt, concrete, boulevard and storm water maintenance; vegetation management; flood mitigation; severe weather and environmental spill response; leaf collection; snow removal; traffic control; and yard maintenance.
• Operates and maintains various hand tools, equipment and trucks as required.
• Works in various weather and challenging visual/noise/smell/dust environments.
• Train on equipment outside Labourer classification, including job related skill training provided by the City.
• Performs required physical demands of lifting, pulling and carrying heavy objects including climbing.
• Comply with Federal/Provincial/City legislative requirements, CUPE 66 Collective Agreement, and City policies and procedures.
• Assigned to different yards for operational purposes and/or training.
• Works after hour mandatory shifts and voluntary overtime.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

• Minimum Ontario Secondary School (OSSD) or approved equivalent.
• Minimum 12 months construction/maintenance experience including demonstrated use of related hand tools and small equipment.
• A valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License is required. A recent Driver’s Abstract will be requested to verify a driving record in good standing, with no more than three demerit points permitted.
• Preference will be given to candidates who possess a valid DZ Driver’s License.
• Acts in accordance with the City’s Corporate Values of Trust, Quality and Excellence including integrity, and sound moral and ethical principles, while representing the City in a positive manner.
• Acts in accordance with the City’s Respectful Workplace Policy including contributing to the climate of understanding and mutual respect for the dignity and worth of each individual.
• Performs required duties with minimal supervision and in a collaborative manner either independently or as part of a team including accepting and executing directions by others in a respectful manner.
• Demonstrates effective leadership, critical thinking, independent judgement and making sound decision skills.
• Demonstrates excellent time management skills to effectively prioritize, organize and execute work.
• Strives for continuous improvement through self-initiative or collaborative approach by innovation and enhancement of practices.
• Works in a safe manner including wearing appropriate PPE, and following Provincial and City health and safety requirements.
• Demonstrates high customer service to Council, residents, internal departments and outside agencies.
• Demonstrates good written/verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrates basic computer search and data input skills.
• To advance to the interview stage, the applicant must achieve a minimum passing score of 65% or above on a practical field/written assessment.

Hours of Work/Shift Work:
40 hr/week, Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Shift work, occasional overtime and rotation between the yards required
