Description
The Team
The British Columbia Ministry of Attorney General’s Legal Services Branch (Articling Student Program) is a well-established group where Articling Students develop practical skills by working closely with experienced counsel and a range of legal professionals, such as paralegals, legal assistants, and supervisory staff. You’ll be part of a welcoming cohort of students, all contributing to important government legal work within British Columbia’s in-house civil law practice. The workplace encourages respect, inclusion, and fairness, ensuring different perspectives are welcomed and help strengthen how legal services are delivered.
The Role
In this position, you will rotate through two legal groups and participate in providing advice to the clients of those groups; and assist with civil litigation small claims files. You’ll experience many areas of legal practice-offering a variety of learning opportunities not commonly found elsewhere-while growing your abilities in a workplace that prioritizes respect and diverse viewpoints. This role offers a meaningful chance to contribute to public service and support outcomes that promote equity and accessibility for people throughout British Columbia.
The Ministry of Attorney General offers interesting and varied articling experiences at its offices in Victoria. The Ministry will be interviewing soon for summer articling student positions starting in May 2027. Further information about the Articling Student Program is available at Summer Articles - Province of British Columbia.
Students who complete their summer with the Legal Services Branch will be assigned to a maximum of two “rotations” with legal groups or subgroups within LSB. Information about rotations can be found here. Students will also work with the Small Claims Program on their own files. These files enable students to build skills in litigation, practice management, client service, and effective communication. Students are supported by supervising lawyers, who provide advice and guidance with issue spotting, legal drafting, courtroom and file preparation, and any questions that arise along the way.
The three (3) summer student positions will lead to articles for 2028/29:
- subject to satisfactory performance;
- any budget/hiring freeze constraints during the summer 2027 temporary articles;
- subject to budgetary approval; and
- successful completion of a short in-program competition.
Applications for articles not linked to summer positions are expected to be accepted from mid-February until late March 2027. Details on how to apply for those positions will be available through the home page of our website starting in February 2027.
We are committed to creating a diverse workplace to represent the population we serve and to better meet the needs of our citizens per the Public Service Act.
