Job Summary

An excellent opportunity to apply your analytical expertise to support BC’s future.

The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) is here to help citizens who may be incapable, are under the age of 19 or who are deceased. The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) has the mandate to:

  • Protect the legal and financial interests of children under the age of 19 years
  • Protect the legal, financial, personal and health care interests of adults who need help with decision-making
  • Administer estates of deceased persons and missing persons

The PGT is a corporation sole which is a legal structure with one person responsible for overall service delivery instead of a board of directors. That person is called the Public Guardian and Trustee. The PGT is independent of government when making decisions on behalf of clients. We are an inclusive organization that seeks to provide culturally safe and respectful services to each client. We are committed to creating a meaningful workplace culture that pursues truth and reconciliation. We put clients first when making decisions and act with the highest ethical, legal and personal standards. We value collaboration with clients, colleagues and partners and believe in the importance of relationships to achieve positive outcomes for clients.

The Services to Adults (STA) division delivers a wide range of individualized services to or on behalf of vulnerable adults who require assistance in managing, protecting, and making decisions about their personal, financial or legal affairs. Vulnerable adults may require assistance by reason of mental illness, development disability, traumatic brain injury or degenerative conditions affecting brain functions (e.g. dementia).

The Committee Review Officer (CRO) manages a case load of private committee files. These individuals are charged with the financial and/or personal care of adults who are resident in or have assets located within the Province of BC. The CRO assesses the risk associated with each file, exercising professional judgement to determine the level of review required. They review the private committee’s accounts to assess the appropriateness of the committee’s management, reconciling reported assets and liabilities to supporting documents and preparing working papers to support their findings. The CRO also investigates concerns of financial mismanagement or personal abuse of adults with a private committee, which may be received from the community or arise from their review of a committee’s accounts, in a timely, sensitive and professional manner. Where the adult’s assets are at risk, the CRO is responsible for taking measures to protect them. The CRO develops and actions an investigation plan, and in consultation with in-house legal counsel, may recommend the private committee’s authority be removed. As the primary contact for private committees and those acting on their behalf, the CRO provides expertise, guidance and resources to assist private committees in understanding their role and responsibilities.

Job Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a business or financial discipline or completion of the 4th Level of a professional accounting program (CPA, CGA, CMA, CA).
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience related to financial reviews or audits, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • Experience with issues relating to adults with disabilities, including financial/tax considerations, community support networks, and other resources available to them.
  • More than two (2) years of experience related to financial reviews or audits.
