Job Summary

A great opportunity to take the next step in your career

The Aquatic Ecosystems Branch provides Provincial leadership, regulatory oversight, policy direction, implementation guidance and coordination for the sustainable management of the fish and aquatic resources of British Columbia. The Provincial Fisheries Policy and Allocation section supports the Director with statutory decisions under the Wildlife Act and contributes substantially to intergovernmental issues associated with provincial authorities enabled by the federal Fisheries Act.

The B.C. recreational freshwater fishery delivers world class recreational opportunities to approximately 300, 000 British Columbians and visitors each year while contributing over $200M to B.C.’s GDP. The Provincial Small Lakes Biologist plays a key role in supporting these diverse recreational fishing opportunities by coordinating policies to guide recreational fishery management, in particular stocking allocation policy direction for the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. The Provincial Small Lakes Biologist serves as the provincial subject matter expert, engaging with counterparts in other jurisdictions to stay apprised of research and initiatives and actively contributing to legislative and policy reviews (ex. Wildlife Act Amendment process). Effectiveness in this role is dependent upon well-developed engagement skills and the ability to maintain positive working relationships with Federal Government, Local Government, Indigenous People, industry, stakeholders, and communities.
