JOB DESCIPTION - TERM OF REFERENCE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Teacher is responsible for ensuring that each child has an opportunity to reach his/her maximum potential through the creation and implementation of suitable programs and teaching styles to meet individual student needs.

Under the supervision of the Principal, and working with the students, the teacher will:

Hold teaching the student as the first and most important responsibility.

Encourage pupils to reach their highest level of individual development by taking into account individual needs, interest and abilities.

Develop each student’s positive self-image, a sense of belonging, and a good attitude to his/her school experience.

Be as objective as possible when discussing controversial issues, such as religion, politics or race.

Respect the right of each student to form his/her own opinions based on accumulated knowledge.

Be sensitive towards and make a sincere attempt to promote and improve and understanding of

First Nations’ culture, value and language.

Provide suitable learning material for student absent form school for an extending period.

Maintain order and discipline in the classroom and on school premises according to the Neskantaga First Nation Education Authority philosophy and policy.

Cooperate with the Principal, colleagues, and the Neskantaga Education Authority in assistant in curriculum adaptation.

Prepare annual long-range plans, with goals and objectives, to be kept on file in the office.

Prepare daily lesson plans of all class activities, conduct the class according to the timetable, and make the timetable available upon request to the substitute teacher (one day in advance), Principal, students and parents.

Reflect on and adjust programs where necessary, based on self-evaluation of their effectiveness.

Regard any personal information about the students as confidence and give out such information only to the appropriate people.

Maintain a record of attendance of all pupils and fill out accordingly.

Report regularly to parents/guardians in order to discuss the individual progress of each student.

Be involved with extra-curricular activities and volunteer in community activities as expected by the Neskantaga First Nation Education Authority and the community.

Actively participate in Professional Development Days, Orientation Week and events.

When necessary, develop individualized programs to meet individual student needs.

Be responsible for the planning of programs, conducted by the teacher assistant for group or individual student.

The teacher will promote the philosophy, priorities, goals, and standards for education adopted by the Neskantaga First Nation Education Authority.

Obey all community by-laws as set out by the Neskantaga First Nation.

Other Duties as directed by your supervisor, as well as duties that may reflect on any community emergency or community needs, as requested from the Council.
