TITLE: Dakelh Resource Teacher 0.6 Limited Duration Position Preference Given to speakers of the Lheidli Tenneh Dialect

DEPARTMENT: Indigenous Education Department

REPORTS TO: District Vice Principals and Director of Aboriginal Education

SUMMARY:

The Dakelh Resource Teacher works to implement culturally responsive curriculum and learning experiences in accordance with the Indigenous Education mandate and Local Education Agreements. The Dakelh Resource Teacher works throughout SD57 in direct collaboration with district staff, educational partners and Indigenous rights holders to ensure authentic infusion of Indigenous content and pedagogies in curriculum, assessments, teaching and learning resources/materials and learning environments. The Dakelh Resource Teacher will have the skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively while providing educational expertise in the development of Dakelh language and culture programs and activities for a variety of grade levels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Working through the Indigenous Education Department the Dakelh Resource Teacher will:

Adapt and create resources for instruction of Dakelh Language and culture, preferably using the Lheidli Tenneh dialect, for a variety of different grade levels working towards developing comprehension and fluency.

Develop and facilitate a variety of learning activities to reinforce the learning and integration of traditional knowledge particular to the region,

Work collaboratively with school, district and Indigenous Education staff to enhance the learning environment for Indigenous students from early learning to grade 12.

Work collaboratively with Elders and other members of the Indigenous community to build support for the Dakelh language and culture.

Contribute to the development and implementation of instructional activities for the creation of a Dakelh culture and language program, preferably in the Lheidli Tenneh dialect, with consideration

to scope and sequence, learning outcomes, and an evaluation process that measures the progress of language acquisition and fluency of communication.

Model and support Dakelh language and culture instruction, preferably in the Lheidli Tenneh dialect, for multi-age groupings of students, support staff and teachers.

Contribute to land-based education learning opportunities related to Dakelh language acquisition, preferably in the Lheidli Tenneh dialect.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Possess an in-depth knowledge of Dakelh culture.

Preferred fluency and ability to read, write and speak in the Dakelh language ideally in the Lheidli dialect.

Experience and knowledge of language learning and teaching theory and methods as it applies to Indigenous language acquisition.

Knowledge and understanding of the local Indigenous community and the diverse Indigenous students and families that we service.

Desire and ability to include a variety of Elders in the program.

The ability and willingness to develop and maintain a positive educational environment while working collaboratively and independently.

Able to work efficiently within a flexible timetable.

Demonstrated abilities to plan, organize, instruct and evaluate learning activities.

An interest in supporting extra-curricular activities (specifically land-based).

Willingness to provide workshops and direct instruction to enhance and support student learning and understanding of local Dakelh culture and language.

Working experience with Indigenous students, performing and analyzing educational resource and methodology for instructing Indigenous students.

Ability to demonstrate strong leadership and teamwork competencies in all areas of Indigenous education

Exceptional interpersonal skills in a cross-cultural setting and particularly those related to promoting and motivating school, parent and community involvement as it relates to supporting the Dakelh culture and language.

Highly motivated and positive with a demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with students, staff, parents and administration

Qualifications:

Indigenous Ancestry with a strong understanding of the role of traditional protocols and their importance to Indigenous communities.

Valid B.C. Teaching Certificate.

Certified First Nations Language teacher, fluent in Dakelh Language, preferably in the Lheidli Tenneh dialect.
