Description
The Unit Clerk plays a key role in helping to foster an integrated team approach on the unit by facilitating communication between nursing and other health disciplines, departments, patients, and families and in maintaining confidentiality of patient information. The Unit Clerk coordinates daily activities during the shift in accordance with the workload, setting priorities and ensuring the completion of assigned tasks.
As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.
Successful completion of a recognized Unit Clerk course, including Medical Terminology. 1-3 years' experience in a unit Clerk position or in a related hospital setting. Medical terminology is required. Well-developed interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbally and in writing. Ability to prioritize work and effectively cope with frequent interruptions. Ability to remain focused in stressful acute patient situations. Basic computer skills are required.
