The Acute Geriatric Unit (AGU) at the RGH provides comprehensive care to frail older adults with complex medical needs requiring rehabilitation in an acute care setting. Working under general supervision, the Unit Clerk serves as the point of first contact to the nursing unit. This position performs a variety of general reception/clerical duties. These duties include but are not limited to:-Maintaining patient records and documents; paper and electronic. Performing admission, discharge, and transfer functions in Connect Care. Coordinating activities/appointments with other departments. Coordinating internal and external transportation of patients and equipment. Requisitions services and appointments from other departments. Answering telephone calls, patient call bell system and monitoring patient access. Faxing of information to related departments. Maintaining desk supplies, unit supplies, and patient chart documents. Participating in desk orientation for unit staff, acting as preceptor for unit clerk students.

As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.

Recent, minimum 6 months current experience in a Unit Clerk role on an in-patient hospital medical or Transition Unit required or currently working as Unit Clerk in ALC or long-term care type facility. Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (sitting for extended periods, ability to lift up to 25lbs). Demonstrated ability to incorporate Patient Family Centered Care elements into practice required. Previous experience working with geriatric patients and their families (including patients with cognitive impairment and dementia) is required. Must have excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize effectively. Demonstrated ability to cope with frequent interruptions and work under pressure within a stressful environment required. Able to work collaboratively with team members is essential. Required Organizational Learning (ROLs) must be up to date for Internal candidates.

Current (within 6 months) experience working with the Calgary zone acute care hospital computer program Connect Care.
