The successful candidate will provide clerical support to the Short Stay Surgery Unit and the Pre-Admission Clinic. The Short Stay Surgery Unit provides pre- and post-surgical care, while the Pre-Admission Clinic provides pre-surgical assessment and screening to adult patients having scheduled surgery at the University of Alberta Hospital. The Unit Clerk plays a key role within the multidisciplinary team, supporting surgical patients through the peri-operative continuum. The Unit Clerk is a principal point of contact with patients and is in a preferred position to impact patient experience. Working on these fast-paced units the successful incumbent will perform clerical duties such as reception, patient registration, assisting with the flow of patients through the unit, coordinating diagnostics, liaising with the multidisciplinary team, word processing and filing. Other duties as required.

As a Unit Clerk, you will be responsible for the efficient flow of communication between health professionals, departments, patients and families while maintaining confidentiality of patient information. You will also be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks which may include reception, greeting and directing visitors, patients and health professionals, maintaining patient records and charts, transcribing and processing physician orders as well as scheduling patient tests and/or treatments. You will also be responsible for performing a range of administrative activities in support of the unit.

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. Completion of an accredited Unit Clerk Course or equivalent training program.

A one-year Unit Clerk certificate (with practicum component) from a recognized post-secondary institution is required. Must have successfully completed a recognized course in medical terminology. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Experience with Connect Care. Demonstrated competency in Excel and Word required. Accuracy and attention to detail essential. Must be able to work early mornings and evenings.

Experience with Netcare. Proven interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills. Excellent organizational, time management and interpersonal skills required as well as the ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision. Must be self-motivated and able to set priorities and meet firm deadlines. Ability to work as a team player in a fast-paced environment. Able to recognize and maintain confidential information.
