Edmonton Zone Continuing Care provides services through five main program areas: Home Living, Supportive Living, Facility Living, Transition Services and Palliative Care. We are looking for an Undergraduate Nurse Employee (UNE) to join our Home Living team to provide professional support services in the homes of clients of all ages and stages of life. The UNE provides a range of patient care services specific to the assigned area under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN); Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) or other regulated health professional. The UNE practices clinical skills with instruction. This is an opportunity to develop further competency in the range and complexity of nurse practice. In collaboration with the UNE, the RN/RPN at the point of care, have the responsibility to make a reasonable UNE Patient Care Assignment. The UNE will provide safe patient care according to their educational preparation and competency and is responsible for seeking consultation and guidance. UNEs are excluded from employment in a practice setting where they are assigned a student clinical preceptorship.

The Undergraduate Nursing Employee (UNE) position provides an opportunity for the nursing student employed as a UNE to consolidate the knowledge and skill acquired in their approved nursing education program towards competency in the range and complexity of Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) practice. The UNE is an unregulated member of the collaborative health care team who provides patient centred care with the supervision of the RN or RPN. The nursing activities performed, and level of supervision required are determined by legislation, standards of supervision outlined by regulatory colleges, Alberta Health Services (AHS) policy, educational preparation, practice setting, complexity of the patient, level of risk involved, and competency of the UNE.

Current enrolment in an approved Alberta nursing education program leading to initial entry to practice as a registered nurse or registered psychiatric nurse. Current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (CPR) certificate. Successful completion of 3rd year of an RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or currently in the final year of an after-degree RN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RN education program; or successful completion of 2nd year of an RPN nursing education program and a minimum of 600 hours of clinical practice in an approved RPN education program.

Ability to work as a member of a team in a professional and mature manner Demonstrated use of critical thinking skills; clinical judgment, problem solving and evaluation Excellent organizational skills - to be able to prioritize and efficiently organize many details in a timely manner and request and accept direction Effective interpersonal and communication skills Respect and tolerance for different individual and cultural lifestyles An excellent attendance record, reliability and personal suitability At the time of interview, you may be required to demonstrate your computer knowledge and proficiency by completing a hands-on assessment. You must demonstrate sufficient typing speed to meet workload demand and navigate through various computer programs including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), Visio, Outlook and Internet.

Previous Community Care and/or geriatric experience is an asset. Previous experience in the health care field and work with older or chronically ill individuals is an asset.
