Description
Located in the Lois Hole Hospital for Women, Unit 4 West Women’s Operating Room and Recovery Room provide primarily gynecological surgical services, including both elective and emergency procedures. The unit consists of 5 operating room theatres, a 5-bay pre-op holding area, and an 8-bay Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). The Service Worker II plays a critical role in ensuring patient and staff safety, maintaining operating efficiency, and supporting the surgical team in both the Operating Room (OR) and PACU. This position goes beyond routine cleaning and stocking-Service Worker IIs are actively integrated into the theatre workflow and recovery unit, working side-by-side with nurses, ORTs, and physicians to ensure a safe, clean, and well-prepared environment for every case. The incumbent must demonstrate initiative, flexibility, and professionalism, while embracing collaboration and teamwork in a fast-paced, high-acuity surgical environment. All interactions should reflect the Essential Habits set forth by the Royal Alex Way. Please note: Service Worker II staff may also be required to provide cleaning support in Labor and Delivery OR (4 East) (BOR) or other areas within the Women’s Health Program as operational needs require.
As a Service Worker II, you will be responsible for readying supplies, and cleaning/disinfecting instruments and specialty equipment for immediate use/reuse by healthcare staff. You will distribute and replenish patient care supplies, perform quality control tests on equipment and record maintenance data. You may also transport patients (clients/residents), equipment, lab specimens, blood and blood products, and patient charts. You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required. In addition, you will ensure that patient care areas and other assigned areas are accurately stocked and that specialty equipment required by the healthcare staff is available.
Grade 12 or equivalent.
Completion of Grade 12 required. Exceptional communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail. Ability to gain a working knowledge of common surgical procedures to anticipate equipment and setup needs. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team. This role is physically demanding and includes: Portering and transferring patients. Moving, lifting, pushing, and pulling equipment and supplies. Frequent bending, walking, and lifting weights of 40-50 lbs or more. Completed Between Case Cleaning Course or Equivalent - Certification. Previous experience in Operating Room turnover and cleaning is preferred. Experience in gynecology or women’s health is considered an asset. Knowledge of infection prevention, aseptic practices, and handling of biohazards.
