The Service Worker I is an exciting role in the McCaig Day Surgery Unit at the Foothills Medical Center working under the direction of the Nurse Clinician and nursing staff. The Service Worker reports directly to the Managers of the department and works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe patient and family centered care. The Service Worker contributes to the flow of pre-operative patients heading to the Operative Room by being accountable for turning over all pre-op beds for the next patients scheduled for surgical care, which means cleaning all bedside equipment, applying new linens, moving and receiving numerous stretchers and wheelchairs over the course of short periods of time throughout the day. The Service Worker also transports patients, ensures patient comfort, and maintains, cleans and handles hospital equipment pertaining to the Unit as well as keeps supplies and linens ordered, stocked, and organized. This position is primarily based in the Day Surgery Unit but will also be responsible for maintaining the hospital equipment on Unit 41B (inpatient general surgery). The Service Worker will also assist with patient transfers using Unit lift equipment and will be responsible for ensuring safe patient care delivery. The Service Worker is a very physically demanding position that requires a high degree of physical fitness and aptitude. You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required.

As a Service Worker I, you will be responsible for transporting patients (clients/residents) and equipment to and from different patient care areas within a hospital site. You will distribute and replenish hospital supplies throughout the units and clean equipment and patient care areas as directed. You may also transport lab specimens, blood and blood products, and patient charts. You will report any concerns regarding supplies and safety issues to Unit Managers and perform other duties as required.

Grade 12 or equivalent.

Grade 12 or equivalent. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification. Must be able to support Department WHS Workplace Inspector and participate in Unit safety audits. Must be able to enter and manage e-facilities requisitions and report Unit safety concerns to management. Must have experience with supply chain/procurement management. Must have experience with inter-departmental collaboration regarding Unit Operations. Must be able to lift minimum of 40 lbs. (18kg). Must be able to push/pull 30 lbs of heavy equipment like stretchers throughout the shift with ease and efficiency to prevent OR delays. Must be able to handle requests for heavy, physical tasks as delegated by nursing staff, including patient lifts. Must have experience using patient lifts (e.g., floor and ceiling). Demonstrated good communication skills. High degree of motivation and organizational skills. Ability to work under supervision and independently. Ability to work in an actively paced area and adapt to frequent interruptions in activity. Previous training and/or experience in It’s Your Move an asset.
