Description
Reporting to the Respiratory Therapy Manager and Assistant Manager, this position serves as the Respiratory Therapy Clinical Leader within Medicine, Surgery, and Endoscopy/Maintenance, ensuring that patient respiratory care needs are met effectively and efficiently. The role involves overseeing Respiratory Therapists to ensure adherence to standards of practice and clinical policies, maintaining current documentation, and providing coaching and mentorship. It includes identifying staff training needs, ensuring high-quality student preceptorships and new staff orientations, and representing Respiratory Therapy Services on designated hospital committees. As a Respiratory Therapist II, the incumbent coordinates, monitors, and assesses clinical services, acts as a clinical resource for daily operations, and contributes to the development of clinical protocols. Responsibilities also include implementing and evaluating respiratory care plans, managing equipment procurement, maintenance, and quality assurance, maintaining adequate supplies, and participating in interprofessional rounds, conferences, and meetings as applicable.
As a Respiratory Therapist II, you will coordinate, monitor and assess clinical services in your assigned area. You will act as a clinical resource for daily operations, coordinating the work of therapy assessment and treatment in your service area, and assist in the development of clinical protocols. You will develop and implement respiratory therapy care plans and monitor the progress of patients (clients, residents) receiving advanced respiratory treatment. You will identify new equipment requirements, and establish and maintain adequate levels of supplies and materials for your area. You will be responsible for respiratory equipment, including but not limited to operation, procurement, maintenance, and quality assurance. You will participate in interprofessional patient, client or resident rounds, conferences and meetings where applicable.
Active or eligible registration with the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta (CARTA).
The successful candidate must be a graduate of a recognized school of Respiratory Therapy, have passed the National Respiratory Certification Exam administered by the Canadian Board for Respiratory Care (CBRC), and hold active registration in good standing with the College Respiratory Therapists of Alberta (CRTA), which must be maintained throughout employment. Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification is also required. A minimum of five years of recent acute care experience in a tertiary teaching hospital. The candidate must demonstrate strong leadership abilities, excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills, a positive attitude, initiative, and the ability to work independently. Additional qualifications include current charge therapist experience, student preceptorship, involvement in quality improvement initiatives and practice change implementation, and active participation on professional committees.
The preferred candidate will hold current Advanced Life Support certification, along with a baccalaureate degree and/or supervisory training, experience, or certification. Experience as a member of the Rapid Response Team is preferred, and familiarity with the Bronchoscopy Suite and Maintenance is considered an asset. These qualifications reflect a strong foundation in clinical expertise, leadership, and specialized respiratory care.
