As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, the ECLS Core Specialist (ECS) is a clinical and technical specialist whose primary role includes set up, priming, monitoring, management, and advanced trouble shooting of all ECLS systems used in the critical care setting at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, including ECMO, VAD (all types), CRRT and TPE. The ECS is trained to recognize technical and clinical emergencies and can safely perform required interventions related to the ECLS equipment, components and circuit. The ECS is immediately available to provide bedside ECLS program coverage, support, and pump shifts. The ECS provides clinical and technical support to the bedside ECLS Specialist and clinical care team, preceptors and provides positive mentorship to all ECLS Specialists The ECS may be involved in direct patient care and nonclinical activities including ECLS program related education, quality assurance, quality improvement, data collection, research, and other assigned projects, during periods of low clinical ECLS program activity. The successful incumbent will perform a variety of duties in accordance with clinical policies and patient care standards. Demonstrated excellent assessment, organization, technical aptitude, and patient care skills are essential. THIS POSTING IS OPEN TO BOTH REGISTERED NURSES AND RESPIRATORY THERAPIST II.

As a Respiratory Therapist II, you will coordinate, monitor and assess clinical services in your assigned area. You will act as a clinical resource for daily operations, coordinating the work of therapy assessment and treatment in your service area, and assist in the development of clinical protocols. You will develop and implement respiratory therapy care plans and monitor the progress of patients (clients, residents) receiving advanced respiratory treatment. You will identify new equipment requirements, and establish and maintain adequate levels of supplies and materials for your area. You will be responsible for respiratory equipment, including but not limited to operation, procurement, maintenance, and quality assurance. You will participate in interprofessional patient, client or resident rounds, conferences and meetings where applicable.

Active or eligible registration with the College and Association of Respiratory Therapists of Alberta (CARTA).

CPR (BCLS-HCP) is required and must be maintained throughout employment. Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or a recognized equivalent. Respiratory Therapist II extended diploma from an accredited school of “Respiratory Therapy. ECLS Certification from an Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) training course (or comparable institutional course based on ELSO guidelines for training).

3-5 years clinical experience in pediatric critical care. 3-5 years clinical experience with ECLS patients and/or as an ECLS specialist. Minimum 500 current clinical ECLS pump hours. Familiarity with ELSO guidelines and standards. Willing to participate on the Stollery ECLS transport / retrieval service and provide on-call coverage as required.
