The Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) Addictions and Mental health Program is a group of dynamic multidisciplinary teams that work together to ensure our patients have the best standard of care and experience. Our site runs six Addictions and Mental Health Programs: Two General Psychiatry Inpatient Units, Day Hospital Program, Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), Consultation Liaison, and the Short Stay Unit (SSU). PES is a 24hrs service operating out of the PLC Emergency Department (ED) that focuses on the assessment and treatment of patients presenting to the ED in a psychiatric or psychosocial crisis. With a dedicated area within the PLC ED, PES provides both direct bedside nursing care for patients awaiting inpatient beds and treatment in the ED and referral recommendations for patients presenting to the ED. As an RN/RPN in PES, you will work within an interprofessional team that specializes in the delivery of quality acute psychiatric care to patients presenting in crisis. Using Trauma Informed Care, the recovery model, and an understanding of the DSM V-TR, you will support patients in understanding their mental health and developing strategies to manage their mental health. You will provide direct bedside care to patients awaiting an inpatient bed or assessment by PES and/or ED. You will engage in basic head to toe assessments and IV therapy when indicated. As a consulting PES Nurse, you will conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments to determine level of illness and risk and make recommendations to Emergency Physicians and Psychiatrists regarding the plan of care. You will collaborate with services and organize referrals to community services or admission to inpatient units based on client need. You will assess and develop, in collaboration with the patient, an effective plan and identify appropriate services for clients and arrange care.

As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $39.58 /hour - $54.16/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.php?id=271#section-0)

RNs - Active or Eligible Registration with CARNA or RPNs - Active or Eligible Registration with CRPNA College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Minimum of 1 year of Addictions and Mental Health experience within the last 3 years with an FTE. New grads who have completed a final preceptorship in PES will be considered. Experience working in community crisis support will also be considered. Minimum typing speed of 60 WPM and computer proficiency. Knowledge of Mental Health Act and Adult Guardianship and Trusteeship Act. Knowledge of verbal de-escalation techniques. Knowledge of the Addiction and Mental Health related resources across the Calgary Zone. Demonstrated organizational and clinical skills in addition to being self-directed and able to work collaboratively in a team environment required. Working Knowledge of Psychotropic medications required. Experience in administering the Mental Status examination. Experience in various risk assessment i.e. Suicide risk, Homicidal risk, violent risk. Knowledge of the addiction and mental health continuum of care. Successful candidates required to complete a 4-week orientation. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. Nursing experience in a high intensity acute care setting. Ability to mentor and support staff an asset. Experience with Dragon Medical One Dictation an asset.
