Physiotherapist I

The Physiotherapist I provides comprehensive services for ambulatory outpatient clients within Rehabilitation Oncology at the Central Alberta Cancer Center, Cancer Care Alberta. It is the role of the Physiotherapist to assess, treat, educate, and collaborate with the patient to enable meaningful occupations. The Physiotherapist will provide evidence-informed services designed to meet the needs of individuals, groups or a community in regard to defining protocols for treatment of a wide range of symptoms from numerous types of cancer. The Physiotherapist may act as a direct service provider, consultant, educator, or advocate and functions as an integral member of the health care team. The primary responsibilities of the successful candidate are: Provision of outpatient physiotherapy assessment, treatment, and consultation to adult patients with cancer-related impairments, including-but-not-limited to lymphedema, chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy, cording, fatigue, mobility, range of motion and strengthening, neurological assessment, head and neck cancer, breast cancer, as well as pain and symptom management. Participate in delivery of patient education classes. Maintain professional development in regard to best practice in rehabilitation oncology. Participate in mentorship of students and providing education to the multidisciplinary team and quality improvement/research initiatives. Demonstrate effective communication with the interdisciplinary team and community as well as external partners. A high level of physical effort and appropriate body mechanics required related to clinical caseload, including heavy lifting at times related to equipment and patients. This position may be eligible for Rural Capacity Investment Recruitment Incentive of up to $60,000 dependance on FTE. There could be flexibility in days, hours and FTE available for this position.

As the Physiotherapist I (PT), you will provide therapeutic interventions to enable clients to achieve optimum physical function and independence in development, disease, disability, chronic conditions, illness and functional decline. You will provide intervention (i.e. prevention, triage, screening, assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, treatment, management, education, consultation, fostering resourcefulness, case management, referral and transition support to individuals, groups, populations and communities. You will include clients and families as integral members of the health care team, encouraging their active participation in all aspects of care. The PT collaborates with patient(s) and families in determining, implementing and evaluating appropriate rehabilitation strategies. You will participate in a variety of interprofessional teams to build awareness, enrich supports and engage in quality improvement; partnering with healthcare providers, patients, families and other stakeholders to advance services for their clients. You will contribute to quality improvement and their professional community; participates in peer mentoring; and supervises students. You may provide clinical supervision to Therapy Assistants, Therapy Aides and Provisional Physiotherapists.

Bachelor's degree in Physiotherapy from an accredited university program. Current registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta.

Minimum 3 year’s clinical experience in an inpatient or outpatient acute care or rehabilitation area, (e.g. neurology, orthopedics, medicine, geriatrics, palliative care and home care). Experience in providing physiotherapy in an interdisciplinary team is essential. Proficiency in Microsoft office program and basic computer skills. Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making skills, in a complex environment. BCLS certification required. It’s Your Move Patient Handling annual certification required. Must have a good understanding of appropriate body mechanics and It’s Your Move Patient Handling techniques and policies.

Minimum 2-3 years oncology experience, specifically pain/symptom control, head and neck cancers, cancers of CNS, breast cancer and lymphedema management. Professional development/certification related to oncologic services, e.g. lymphedema management, manual lymphatic drainage and acupuncture. Established relationships with relevant programs in Cancer Care Alberta is an asset. Experience in Connect Care/EPIC electronic documentation. Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) Authorizer.
