Description
Practicing within their full scope, the Pharmacy Technician performs all aspects of drug distribution to provide for the effective daily operation of all departmental services and programs leading to safe and effective patient care. The Rural Pharmacy Technician is expected to work at the multiple Calgary Zone Rural sites as the need arises to cover any unforeseen absences. Core duties may include, but are not limited to: Order entry, preparation, repackaging and final product checking of sterile and non-sterile products, individual patient prescriptions and ward stock. Providing guidance to and assisting with the training and orientation of staff and students. Providing clinical support through obtaining information to facilitate medication reconciliation activities and clarifies discrepancies and/or collects and organizes information to support the provision of direct patient care. Building interactive relationships with all members of the healthcare team including communicating with nursing staff to clarify orders and requests, and triaging drug information questions and distribution issues. Maintaining a high standard of performance through completion of internal validation programs that assess proficiency in identified tasks such as aseptic technique, computer order entry, and final product checking. Participate in inventory management duties. Participating in special projects and programs as assigned. Maintaining department records, statistics and preparing reports as required. Vehicle is required as multi-site travel is expected.
As a Pharmacy Technician I, you will be responsible for the preparation and distribution of pharmaceutical products. You will receive and triage medication orders, compound and repackage medication and prepare sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical products.
Completion of a CCAPP-accredited Pharmacy Technician Training Program. Current, provisional, or transferable registration with the Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) as a Pharmacy Technician.
Prior hospital experience with a variety of responsibilities, including but not limited to order entry, Connect Care/EPIC Willow Pharmacy application knowledge, checking, sterile compounding, chemotherapy preparation, and all aspects of drug distribution. Minimum 1 year of experience in the last 5 years in all aspects of chemotherapy, including but not limited to receiving, order entry, setup preparation, and checking. Demonstrated communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, organizational and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to work in teams. Demonstrated computer or word processing skills. Demonstrated commitment to continual personal quality improvement and lifelong learning. Must be accurate, reliable, precise, cooperative and self-motivated. Ability to demonstrate effective service attitude and act with professionalism. Prior experience in rural pharmacy setting. Prior experience in retail pharmacy setting. Membership with a professional pharmacy organization (e.g. PTSA).
Recent (2 to 5 years) experience and certification in sterile compounding. Recent (2 to 5 years) experience and certification preparing & checking oncology products, preferably Cancer Care trained and certified.
