Description
The Patient & Family Centred Care (PFCC) team at the Stollery Children’s Hospital is seeking a part time compassionate Peer Support Worker to provide emotional and practical support to families navigating pediatric care. The successful candidate will have lived experience in a tertiary acute care pediatric designated facility and will have engaged in special training and skill development to use their experience and other skillsets to enhance their ability to support others. This is a non-clinical role.
As a Peer Support Worker, you will provide interventions and supports that are complementary to the work of a multi-disciplinary outreach team. The team functions together to provide treatment, rehabilitation and support services for the diverse needs of clients navigating life impacting experiences. Through your own lived experience(s), and experiences of recovery and resilience, as the Peer Support Worker, you can authentically inspire hope to clients by sharing your story, offering mentorship and support; advocating for client needs; and supporting an integrated and resiliency/recovery-oriented health care and treatment experience.

Formal Peer Support Training. Experience in a tertiary acute care pediatric designated facility. Proficiency in Microsoft Office including teams, outlook, power point, excel. Proficient knowledge of how to apply Person-Centred and/or Person-Directed Care approaches. Demonstrated ability to adhere to professional boundaries and codes of conduct. Ability to assess how and when to skillfully use selective self-disclosure (sharing your story). Strong written and verbal communication skills. Availability to work evenings and weekends as required. Ability to travel to multiple Stollery sites. The ability to practice self-care, monitoring personal well-being, and taking steps to prevent burnout and compassion fatigue. Formal training in trauma informed care. Experience in group facilitation.
Completion of Stollery PFCC Peer Support Training. Lived experience within any Stollery Children's Hospital site (including RAH NICU, Sturgeon NICU, Glenrose Rehabilitation Clinics etc.). Lived experience in a pediatric ICU space or long-term pediatric admission. First Aid and Mental Health First Aid training. Conflict resolution and de-escalation training.
