The Calgary Zone Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Rehab Therapy team works collaboratively with families, infants & care providers in NICUs at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Foothills Medical Center, Peter Lougheed Center, South Health Campus, and Rockyview General Hospital. The NICU Clinical Lead (CL) position involves provision of patient care in NICUs & is required to travel to different sites based on demand for service. The CL is responsible for ensuring that clinical practice within the NICU team is patient-centered, supports best practice, & meets clinical standards of practice. This position requires advanced professional knowledge including support for neonates in an intensive care setting, providing holistic support in eating, feeding, swallowing, positioning, splinting, discharge planning, equipment recommendations, neurological rehabilitation & developmental care. The CL may support other program work based on priorities within the site (ambulatory areas, inpatients). Leadership responsibilities include coordination of clinical work; workload distribution, clinical leadership, guidance/mentorship of professional & support staff, orientation/supervision of staff/students/assistants, participation in department/program committees, program development, evaluation, & research may be part of the role. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within interdisciplinary team; excellent clinical reasoning, problem-solving skills, analytical thinking & conflict resolution; organized to manage a large/complex caseload; demonstrate initiative, adaptability/flexibility to meet varying clinical/operational needs; effective interpersonal & verbal/written communication skills. As an Occupational Therapist II, you will be responsible for the coordination of occupational therapy and other allied health clinical services within a program or service area. You will provide supervision of students and team members as assigned. As an Occupational Therapist II, you will be responsible to work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team where you will be an integral member, providing leadership to other healthcare professionals. You will be making day-to-day clinical decisions on patient/family needs regarding assessment, intervention, discharge and follow-up. You will make decisions and advise team members on complex clinical cases and provide clinical leadership within the program or service area to ensure safe, efficient and effective client care. You will ensure occupational therapy practice is evidence-based and in alignment with Alberta legislation and regulations, professional standards of practice, code of ethics and AHS policy and guidelines. You will be providing coordination of the day-to-day operations of an assigned service area and monitoring care delivery, identifying service needs and assisting other medical staff with caseload management, completing chart audits and providing follow-up and feedback to staff. You will be participating in program development and operational planning and representing the department on committees or programs. You will be making decisions on staffing level requirements, workflow and caseload priorities in collaboration with managers and other healthcare providers. As assigned, you will carry out the roles of a direct clinical service provider, consultant, educator and/or advocate in your program or service area.
Master's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university program or bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university program and related experience. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).
Minimum five (5) years of relevant, related clinical experience. Minimum five (5) years of experience working in eating, feeding, and swallowing care provision. Extensive (ideally 5years of more) experience in pediatric acute care setting. Knowledge and experience in fragile infant feeding (FIF) and neonatology. Experience in pressure and positioning of infants. Knowledge of community resources.
Completion of course work related to team building, communication and/or leadership. Splinting experience preferred. Knowledge and experience with neonatal massage preferred. Knowledge and experience with infant development. BCLS-HCP certification. AADL authorization required for some services. FINE training. Neonatal Massage training.
