Occupational Therapist I

Are you an Occupational Therapist (OT) who loves working with a dynamic interdisciplinary team? Do you have experience working in an adult neuro rehab setting? The Community Accessible Rehabilitation (CAR) program might be the place for you. We are an outpatient rehabilitation program for adults, specializing in complex and/or chronic neurological conditions. We are looking for an OT with clinical experience treating neurological conditions, including stroke, acquired brain injury, spinal cord injury and degenerative neurological conditions. The OT will assess and treat clients with changes in cognition, U/E function and vision as part of their core activity. Experience with custom hand splinting post-Botox is an asset. The OT works as part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team and will operate in a client-centered, functional, outcome-based outpatient rehabilitation model. CAR is a multi-site program, and this position is located out of the Peter Lougheed Centre. The caseload for all positions within CAR may be subject to change based on operational considerations with 80% of this role involved in direct patient care activities.

As an Occupational Therapist (OT), you will provide evidence-informed services, with a focus on occupational performance designed to meet the needs of individuals, groups, or a community. You may act as a direct service provider, consultant, educator, or advocate and function as an integral health care team member. You will engage individuals, groups, and communities to enable meaningful and chosen occupations, including self-care, productivity and leisure. You will support clients to achieve optimum functional abilities and independence related to their cognitive, affective, spiritual, and physical strengths and limitations. As an OT, you will provide comprehensive services, including triage, screening, consultation, assessment, diagnosis, collaborative goal setting, treatment, prevention, self-management, education, case management, referral, transition support, and collaboration with relevant and chosen stakeholders and supports within the client¿s physical, institutional, cultural, and social environments. You will include clients and families as integral members of the health care team, encouraging their active participation in all aspects of care. You will collaborate with clients and families in determining, implementing, and evaluating rehabilitation. You will participate in a variety of interprofessional teams to build awareness, enrich support and engage in quality improvement by partnering with healthcare providers, patients, families, and other stakeholders to advance services for the clients. You will contribute to quality improvement and their professional community and participate in peer mentoring and supervising students. You may also provide clinical supervision to Therapy Assistants and Therapy Aides.

Completion of bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university program. Registered with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).

A minimum of 1-year recent (within the past 3 years) experience with the assessment and treatment of adult clients in a neurorehabilitation setting is required. Experience performing assessment and treatment of cognition for stroke and brain injury diagnoses. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement treatment programs to achieve goal-based functional outcomes. Demonstrated ability to function effectively within a client-centered, interdisciplinary team of health care professionals required. Demonstrated knowledge and application of evidence-based practice for clients with neurological conditions Effective self-management skills and demonstrated initiative required. Strong interpersonal and communication skills required with the ability to demonstrate English fluency. Current BLS certification.

Experience working in an outpatient community setting. Experience with custom hand splinting for the neurological population. Experience in the use of FES for upper extremities to improve functional mobility. Experience with the assessment tools and processes to determine a client’s ability to drive following a neurological event.
