Description
Child & Adolescent Mental Health at the Royal Alexandra and Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospitals offer a range of tertiary-level services to support youth and their families navigating complex emotional, behavioral and mental health challenges. Psychiatric assessment and treatment services are provided by using a multidisciplinary team approach to patient centered care. Reporting to the Unit Manager or designate, the Mental Health Aide assists in the provision of direct patient care to meet the patient’s general needs of hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs (e.g. direct observation) in accordance with patient care plans, and hospital policies and procedures. As part of the multidisciplinary team, the Mental Health Aide also assists in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, families, staff and visitors. The Mental Health Aide should demonstrate: Effective Strong verbal communication skills that support verbal messages being received and understood. Active listening skills and congruent non-verbal communication skills. The ability to establish and maintain professional relationships is built on mutual respect, appropriate sensitivity and transparency, empathy, and compassion with patients, families, colleagues, professional and medical staff. Ability to manage emotions and strong feelings, maintain a calm and tactful composure under a broad range of challenging circumstances, and to think clearly and stay focused under pressure. Ability to collaborate effectively with assigned nurse and charge nurse throughout shift on assigned patient(s) and within the team. Ability to enhance, support, empower and otherwise increase patient engagement in treatment and change.
As a Mental Health Aide, you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team to provide a welcoming and safe care environment. You will assist in the provision of direct patient/client care as delegated in a person-centered, recovery oriented and safe manner. In this position, you will assist and / or promote independence to patients/clients in completing activities of daily living as well as assisting other health professionals with providing treatments and observing and reporting relevant patient/client information to professional staff. You will assist new patients/clients and families with orientation, and assist in the general support of the work area.
Completion of Grade 12. A combination of education and experience satisfactory to the employer will also be considered.
Completion of Mental Health First Aide certificate required. Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent. English language proficiency required. This position has transitioned to Recovery Alberta effective September 1, 2024. P.C.A or M.A.A certification or equivalent. Hospital experience working in mental health (minimum 2 years). Experience in working with children and adolescent mental health patients preferred. Certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention
