Want to work in Mental Health and Addiction? We are currently looking for a Mental Health Aide to join our inpatient team located on units 61 & 62 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Our programs are dynamic, fast-paced, and patient/family centered, where all members of the interdisciplinary team work within the collaborative care (CoACT) framework. Reporting to the Unit Manager and working under the direction of nursing, the mental health aide performs activities that support meeting the personal care needs and comforts of patients in accordance with patient care plans and hospital policies and procedures. This includes (but is not limited to) assisting in the provision of routine care to meet patient’s hygiene, nutrition, vital sign monitoring, mobility, recreation and safety needs. You will also assist in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients & families, staff and visitors. Off campus patient escort duties may be assigned. Essentially, you will be supporting nursing and other clinical staff to carry out quality, evidenced based care.

As a Mental Health Aide, you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team to provide a welcoming and safe care environment. You will assist in the provision of direct patient/client care as delegated in a person-centered, recovery oriented and safe manner. In this position, you will assist and / or promote independence to patients/clients in completing activities of daily living as well as assisting other health professionals with providing treatments and observing and reporting relevant patient/client information to professional staff. You will assist new patients/clients and families with orientation, and assist in the general support of the work area.

Completion of Grade 12. A combination of education and experience satisfactory to the employer will also be considered.

Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Non Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training. Strong and fluent verbal communication skills (English language proficiency is required) that supports verbal messages being received and understood. High emotional awareness of self and others Active listening skills Congruent non-verbal communication skills Has the ability to establish and maintain relationships built on mutual respect, appropriate sensitivity and transparency, empathy and compassion with patients & families, colleagues, professional and medical staff. Has sound self-management skills - being able to manage own emotions and strong feelings; maintain a calm and tactful composure under a broad range of challenging circumstances and think clearly and stay focused under pressure. Works cooperatively and productively with others. Enhance, support, empower and otherwise increase patient engagement in treatment and change. Has demonstrated ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks. Has an excellent attendance record.

Minimum 2 years’ experience working with persons with an addiction and/or mental health issue - preferably in a hospital setting. Post-secondary education in social sciences, psychology or health services.
