U33 is the Neurology and General Medicine unit at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre. We are a 36 bed acute care inpatient unit that houses the Central Zone Neurologist and Red Deer Stroke Programs. We are the primary care centre for stroke and neurology patients, with all nursing staff getting specially trained in caring for these populations. The unit also cares for a wide range of general internal medicine and hospitalist patients, which provides countless opportunities to develop wide ranging nursing skills and experiences. The unit uses Collaborative Care where teams of RNs, LPNs, and HCAs work together to their full scopes alongside a vast interdisciplinary team. The unit offers extensive educational opportunities and strives to provide stroke unit care at the same levels as Edmonton and Calgary. Mentorship, professional development, and the experiences that come with our varied population helps nurses gain a unique set of skills so that they can work towards many different future career paths if desired. Chances to get involved in quality improvement strategies and research projects are always available as well. New hires can look forward to a comprehensive orientation and mentorship as staff grow and progress in their leadership skills alongside their nursing teammates. Of course, just like many acute care units, each shift can look different than the next and at times it may seem that organized chaos is following you around. However, on U33 we use patience, empathy, peer support, communication, and humour to keep our work lives balanced and enjoyable. If these traits describe you, come meet a work family of wonderful human beings just like you!
