Description
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive patient and family centered care on an acute surgical unit in accordance with the UAH and AHS policy and procedures. 3G3 is an 18+ bed unit providing care to Orthopedic, Spine and General Surgery patients received from the operating room, emergency department, intensive care unit and directly from home and/or surgery clinics. Decisions are made in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment. Note: Rotation subject to change.
As a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you are part of an interprofessional health care team utilizing nursing processes, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills. You will be guided by your education, experience, demonstrated skill level and AHS policies and procedures. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited practical nurse education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Successful candidate is expected to pass the medication calculation exam (80% score) provided by the surgery program within 14 days of orientation. The candidate has 3 attempts to pass the exam within the 2-week orientation period. The candidate must be able to work within a team environment and to effectively contribute to patient/client planning processes. Excellent communication skills, a compassionate and caring attitude, and attention to detail are necessary. Strong interpersonal, problem solving and conflict resolution skills are needed. The LPN must be able to work in a fast paced, physically demanding environment, including standing, walking, lifting, pushing/pulling greater 25-50lbs, as well as reaching for patients who range from low to high BMI. Must not have any current activity restrictions, such as pulling, pushing, reaching and bending.
Communicate findings concisely, accurately in written & verbal form, deal with stressful situations, prioritize complex patient care needs & workload while dealing with interruptions. Demonstrated initiative, reliability, flexibility & critical thinking. Maintain collaborative working relationships in multidisciplinary environment. Strong patient teaching skills. Preference given to those with 3 years+ of recent Ortho/Spine Surgery experience, previous tracheostomy care & charge experience.
