Description
Reporting to the Unit Manager for the Pediatric Surgery Clinics, this position functions as part of a multidisciplinary team. The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Orthopaedic Tech Certified utilizes the nursing process, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making skills to provide care to pediatric patients. Actively participates in program development and evaluation and clinical teaching activities. Under a Physician's written or verbal order, the Orthopedic Technician is responsible to carry out technical procedures: casting, splinting; removal of sutures and staples; wound care, and dressings. Assisting Physicians with procedures and other related duties. Responsible for charting all procedures performed on a patient in the patient’s medical record. Assists with general duties as required in the clinic such as cleaning and restocking. As a member of the multidisciplinary team caring for children, the Licensed Practical Nurse (Orthopedic Technician) provides direct patient care in accordance with both the UAH and Stollery Children's Hospital policies and procedures. The Licensed Practical Nurse will provide direct care and support to pediatric patients, their families and caregivers while recognizing the value of and working within a Family Centered Care philosophy. Decisions are made in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. This position will require the incumbent to leave the Pediatric Surgery Clinic to assist on the inpatient units or in the operating room as per departmental needs.
As an Orthopaedic Technician (Ortho Tech), you will apply, adjust, and remove casts, splints and traction equipment utilized in the care of orthopaedic patients (clients, residents). You will observe, monitor, report and document changes in the patient's physical, mental and emotional state, while providing safe and effective, quality care. You will play a key role in providing safe, high quality, patient and family centred care while reflecting the shared vision and values of the organization.
Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). Completion of an accredited specialty Orthopaedic Technician program. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
