Are you looking for an opportunity to flex your knowledge in Facility Operations? If so, the Foothills Medical Center Facilities, Maintenance, & Engineering (FM&E) has an amazing opportunity for an experienced Electrical/Architectural Lead Hand who can display their skills in all building systems while offering team-focused leadership in a dynamic, multi-trade atmosphere. The Lead Hand (Electrical/Architectural) is a supervisory role responsible for providing functional supervision to a large team of tradespeople and maintenance staff with diverse skillsets. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong understanding of how facilities contribute to Patient and Family Centered Care and be committed to prioritizing patient needs in all operational decisions. Key responsibilities include assigning day-to-day tasks, coordinating preventative and emergency maintenance programs, supporting Lean initiatives, and revising policies based on health and safety legislation. The Lead Hand also prepares cost estimates, reviews shop drawings and project plans, oversees equipment installations, and ensures adherence to infection control and safety procedures. This role requires frequent liaison with vendors, contractors, internal customers, and other departments, ensuring project standards align with facility guidelines. Additionally, the Lead Hand is responsible for orienting new staff, maintaining workplace organization using 5S principles, and contributing to continuous improvement and training. The position will have the opportunity to work and provide shift coverage to all buildings within the campus.

As a Lead Hand, you will be responsible for providing functional supervision to a moderately sized group of similar journeyperson trade staff. In addition to functional supervision, you will perform a wide variety of journeyperson level trade duties associated with maintaining, renovating, repairing and construction in accordance with AHS standards and practices. You will assign work of journeyperson and supervise staff and perform ongoing maintenance work in an area of assigned trade or related responsibility. In addition, you will provide health and safety training and orientation and ensure compliance.

Completion of an accredited Journeyperson Certificate in trades from Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.

Grade 12 diploma or equivalent required. Must possess an Alberta Journeyman Certificate in a relevant trade or a two-year Engineering Technologist Diploma from an accredited institution. A minimum of five (5) years’ maintenance experience in a healthcare or hospital setting is required, with at least three (3) years of recent progressive responsibility supervising a multi-trade team in a Lead Hand or equivalent role. Candidates must demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude and be thoroughly familiar with tools and equipment used in the trade. A solid understanding of building infrastructure-including HVAC, BMS, IT, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems-is essential, along with the ability to read blueprints and schematics. Strong verbal and written communication skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) are required. The role demands a high degree of self-direction, adaptability, and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment. Candidates must be reliable, detail-oriented, and physically capable of duties involving sitting, kneeling, crawling, squatting, walking, and working at heights. Experience developing operational procedures, training staff, and maintaining confidentiality is essential. Must meet all organizational employment policy requirements.

Certificate or diploma in Building Environmental Systems Technology. Knowledge of CSA Z317.2, ASHRAE 170, infection control, and safety regulations. Alberta Master Electrician certification are assets. Experience starting a new hospital, setting up maintenance operations, and training staff. Physically able to perform duties and remain composed in emergencies. Willingness to pursue ongoing education.
