Description
Under the supervision and direction of an RN, RPN, or LPN (Licensed Health Care Professional), the Health Care Aide (HCA) provides direct care to clients in their homes and in lodge settings. Responsibilities include: Providing personal care and assisting with activities of daily living as outlined in the care plan, including but not limited to personal hygiene, dressing, feeding, grooming, transferring, and mobilizing. Providing emotional support by being a good listener, demonstrating empathy, and interacting in a positive, supportive, and respectful manner. Providing respite care to relieve family caregivers, including companionship, recreational activities, and supervision. Performing health care duties as authorized within the client's plan of care, including simple dressings, medication assistance, catheter care, ostomy care, and exercises to support range of motion and strengthening. Providing housekeeping services that are essential to the client's activities of daily living only within their immediate living space to support their ability to remain safe in their home and community. This position is based out of Airdrie Home Care and serves the communities such as Airdrie, Kemoma, Kathryn, Biesecker, Irricana and surrounding rural communities. As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multidisciplinary team, providing personal assistance by supporting activities of daily living and delivering support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this role, you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers across the continuum of care in home, community, and health care facilities. You will assist nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation, and safety needs; assist with organized activities or programs; and observe and report on patients' mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under the supervision of a regulated health professional, you will assist in maintaining a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors, while supporting effective communication with patients and health care professionals. PLEASE NOTE: Until a new hire provides proof of HCA certification, they will be paid at the uncertified pay grade in accordance with the AUPE AUX Collective Agreement.
Active or eligible for registration or practice permit with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) as a Health Care Aide, along with proof of education or completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire.
Must be a graduate of an educational program that uses the Provincial Curriculum for Health Care Aides or have met the criteria outlined in the Substantially Equivalent Competency Guidelines. Active registration with CLHA. Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP) certification is required. Ability to work as a member of a team and to request and accept direction when required. Effective verbal and written English communication skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with patients/clients, families, visitors, and team members. Medication Assistance Certificate or previous experience providing medication assistance. Previous experience in the health care field and working with older adults or chronically ill individuals is preferred. Well-developed time management and organizational skills.
Previous community or Home Care experience. Medication assistance experience. Ability to work independently in a community setting. Proficiency with iPhone technology, computers, and email applications.
