AHS is the largest acute care service provider in Alberta and is part of a fully integrated health system. AHS’ Stollery Children’s Hospital (Stollery) in Edmonton, is a full-service pediatric quaternary care hospital. It is associated with the University of Alberta campus where multidisciplinary health program students are trained, and health research is facilitated. It is the only specialized healthcare facility for infants, children and youth in central and northern Alberta and has among the highest inpatient and acute ambulatory service volumes of any children’s hospital in Canada. Health Care Aid (HCA) reports to the manager of the 2E Pediatric Ambulatory Clinic. The program accepts patients from birth to 18 years of age, and the patient population may include (not limited to) Respirology, Neurology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology and overflow demand from other pediatric care programs requiring inpatient beds.

As a Health Care Aide (HCA), you will work as a collaborative member of the multi-disciplinary team providing personal assistance including supporting activities of daily living and support services to patients (clients, residents) who require short-term assistance or ongoing support, in accordance with the patient care plan and facility policies and procedures. In this position you will work closely with patients, families, and caregivers spanning the continuum of care in home, community or health care facilities assisting nurses with the provision of routine care to meet patients' hygiene, nutrition, mobility, recreation and safety needs, assisting with organized activities or programs and observing and reporting on a patient's mood, health, and wellbeing. Working under a regulated health professional you will be assisting in the maintenance of a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors, and maintaining effective communication with patients and health professionals.

Completion of Health Care Aide Certificate within 18 months of hire and active directory status on the Alberta Health Care Aide Directory. Must provide a confirmation letter as proof of enrolment from the Directory at https://www.albertahcadirectory.com/health-care-aides/confirmation/. Nursing students currently enrolled in an approved Alberta nursing program who have successfully completed a minimum of 100 hours of practicum; and are either in their 1st year of practical nursing program; or 2nd year of baccalaureate nursing or psychiatric nursing program will be considered. Must attest to this compliance and provide proof of qualification.

In collaboration with patients & families, and multidisciplinary health team members, the HCA is responsible for delivering personal care by supporting activities of daily living (i.e. grooming, feeding, toileting…), assisting with assessments, procedures, providing comfort measures, documenting care/observations/activities in the patient record. Other duties (not limited to) include: portering, delivering specimens to labs, maintaining inventory and ordering supplies, cleaning and maintaining equipment, and monitoring unit tidiness. The successful applicant will be orientated and may be cross-trained to the other clinical areas within its program, and over time to other management selected Stollery ambulatory & inpatient programs to enable intermittent system capacity requirements. The HCA plays a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family-centered care, whose actions reflect the shared mission, vision and values of AHS, and adhere to Stollery’s policies, guidelines, and procedures. Physical requirements include long periods of standing, walking, and includes crouching, lifting up to 50lbs, patient transfers, and the ability to reach over the shoulder. Work occurs in a fast-paced environment. The role requires provision of constant care. Preference will be given to candidates with recent ambulatory experience in pediatrics. Preference will be given to candidates with previous childcare experience and/or education.
