Assisted Living Alberta (ALA) is seeking an accomplished and strategic human resources leader to join our organization as Executive Director, People & Culture. Reporting to the Chief Administrative and Financial Officer, this senior leadership role provides strategic HR leadership and expertise across ALA, helping to build a high-performing, engaged and resilient workforce. As a trusted advisor to the CEO and Executive Leadership Team, you will lead the development, implementation and monitoring of ALA’s People Strategy while helping shape an inclusive, healthy and values-driven organizational culture. You will work collaboratively with leaders and teams across Alberta, providing strategic guidance on workforce planning, talent management, labour relations, organizational change, employee experience, workplace health and safety, and HR compliance. This is an exciting opportunity to influence the people and culture foundation of an evolving organization and help position ALA as a leader in continuing care excellence. This position may work in the Edmonton or Calgary Zone.
The Executive Director, People & Culture provides strategic leadership and oversight for human resources functions, including HR Business Partnerships, Talent & Workforce Strategies, Labour Relations, HR Shared Services, Workplace Health & Safety, and HR Compliance. You will develop and execute integrated workforce strategies that support ALA’s strategic and operational priorities, including recruitment, workforce planning, learning and development, onboarding, employee engagement, retention, and organizational change. You will champion diversity, equity and inclusion and support initiatives that foster employee health, wellness, safety and belonging. Working with ALA’s Executive Leadership Team and internal and external partners, you will establish effective relationships and coordinate HR services delivered through the Shared Services Organization. You will also provide expert advice on organizational health, workforce capabilities, performance, and transformation opportunities. You will establish and monitor key HR measures, identify workforce trends and risks, and ensure HR practices align with applicable policies, legislation, service agreements, and organizational priorities.
A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field is required, along with a Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) or related professional designation such as MHRM or SHRM-SCP. A minimum of 10 years of progressive human resources experience is required, including at least three years in a leadership or managerial role. Experience within healthcare, social services or continuing care environments is required. The successful candidate will have experience working within a large, multilayered organization and managing diverse partnerships and relationships. Experience implementing HR policies, systems and processes and interpreting and applying Alberta and federal employment legislation, labour relations requirements and HR best practices is also required.
Demonstrated experience leading workforce planning, talent development, learning and training initiatives within a new or evolving organizational environment. Proven ability to lead strategic initiatives and organizational change while fostering innovation, adaptability, and continuous improvement. Strong knowledge of recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee relations, compensation and benefits, workplace culture, and employment compliance. Experience using HRIS, HR analytics, and technology to support data-informed decisions and improve HR processes. Exceptional relationship-building, communication, negotiation and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate with executives, staff, unions, and external partners. Demonstrated ability to build an inclusive workplace culture and support employee engagement, retention and DEI initiatives. Strong judgment and resilience when managing complex or challenging situations, with a demonstrated commitment to integrity, transparency, and ethical leadership. Project management experience in a dynamic and evolving environment is required.
A master’s degree in Business, Human Resources or a related field. Experience collaborating with a Shared Services Organization, familiarity with HR technology and HRIS platforms, and demonstrated experience developing and implementing DEI strategies and initiatives.
