In keeping with Alberta Health Services’ Mission and Values, and as an integral member of the Environmental Services team, the Environmental Services Worker is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and staff during evening and night operations. The ESW performs routine cleaning, collection and disposal of general waste, and general upkeep of the facility. Duties also include detailed and specialized cleaning of designated areas such as operating rooms, pharmacy, and other clinical spaces as required. All tasks must be completed in accordance with Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) standards and established Environmental Services procedures. Working primarily on evening and night shifts, the ESW must be able to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety in a busy, fast-paced healthcare environment. The role requires strong attention to detail, accountability, and the ability to prioritize tasks during off-peak hours of facility operation. The ESW is expected to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and demonstrate respectful, compassionate interactions with patients, visitors, and colleagues. The position may also assist with the orientation and training of new staff and perform other related duties as required to support the Environmental Services team.

As an Environmental Services staff, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks associated with cleaning and disinfecting clinical and non-clinical healthcare environments within a hospital or facility. Your typical duties may include sweeping, mopping and vacuuming; restocking supplies in bathroom facilities; stripping linen and making beds; operating industrial cleaning equipment for floor maintenance and restoration; thorough washing of ceilings and windows; emptying hazardous waste; and replenishing cleaning supplies and linens. You will also be responsible for identifying and reporting potential hazards to your Working Leader and you may also provide training or orientation to Environmental or Laundry staff.

Completion of Grade 10 or equivalent. Knowledge and operation of computers and smartphones. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time and perform repetitive movements for the duration of your shift. Physically capable to lift up to 25 lbs and push and pull up to 50 lbs of force.

Must be available to work evening shifts from 1600-2300 hours and may be required to work night shifts from 2300-0715 hours based on operational needs. Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks with minimal supervision. Strong communication skills, including clear verbal and written communication, with the ability to interact respectfully and professionally with patients, staff, and team members.

Experience working evening or night shifts. Environmental Services or housekeeping experience in a healthcare setting. Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) cleaning practices. WHMIS training and experience handling cleaning chemicals. Experience with healthcare cleaning equipment and procedures. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong organization and time-management skills.
