Are you passionate about supporting your community and interested in launching a career in Emergency Medical Services (EMS)? The EMS Cadet program is a unique, paid employment opportunity for individuals committed to becoming Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs). This transitional role is designed for those enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, an approved EMR training program. As an EMS Cadet, you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience embedded within a team of EMS professionals in Northern Alberta. You’ll learn by supporting station readiness, assisting with basic care tasks, and observing emergency response operations. The position includes tuition reimbursement and the opportunity to transition into a full-time EMR position upon successful completion of your training and provincial registration. This is a conditional offer of employment. Continued employment as an EMS Cadet is contingent upon enrollment in an approved EMR program within 12 weeks of hire, and successful completion of the program within 12 months. As a condition of participation in the EMS Cadet Program, a Return of Service Agreement is required. Upon successful completion of Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) training and registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics, you agree to accept and maintain employment in an EMR position within Alberta Health Services’ North Zone for a minimum period of twelve (12) consecutive months. This position must be equivalent to at least 0.40 full-time equivalency (FTE) and may include eligibility for benefits. If you do not successfully complete the program, or if the Return of Service Agreement is not fulfilled, tuition repayment may be required. As an EMS Cadet, you will be part of a dedicated team focused on providing emergency medical services to individuals in need. Under the guidance of the attending EMS Primary Care or Advanced Care Paramedic, you will be assigned duties within an EMS station and on an ambulance. Your primary responsibility will be to support day-to-day EMS duties, including station and ambulance cleanliness, ordering and restocking supplies, and assisting with EMS fleet and vehicle operations, such as maintenance and the transportation of fleet and equipment. Additionally, you will participate as a 'Third-on-Car' supporting EMS crews with equipment and supply supports.

Completion of grade 12 diploma or recognized equivalent. Must be eligible to apply and be accepted into an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) program approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACOP) and must enroll within 12 weeks of hire and complete the program within 12 months. Valid Alberta Class 5 Non-GDL Driver¿s Licence with less than three (3) demerit points. Ability to apply for an Alberta Class 4 licence or equivalent.

Understanding of EMS team roles and patient care principles. Demonstrates professionalism, empathy, responsibility, and accountability. Excellent communication and time-management skills. Physically fit and capable of lifting/moving equipment. Available to work a rotating schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays. Able to obtain non-restricted registration as an EMR with the Alberta College of Paramedics after EMR graduation. Able to successfully complete all required qualifications of the EMR role, including but not limited to: Non-restricted registration in good standing with the Alberta College of Paramedics (ACOP) as Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Healthcare Provider (BCLS-HCP). Must be able to obtain a valid class 4 Alberta Operator License or equivalent. Successful completion of the Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation (F.A.R.E.) test via the certificate provided by the Lifemark. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, AHS currently has a Remote Retention Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $3,000. This allowance is non-pensionable and is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.

Previous experience in a youth EMS program, lifeguarding, first response, or ski patrol. Certificate of successful completion of the Functional Abilities Recruitment Evaluation offered by Lifemark required for transition to EMR.
