Health Shared Services (HSS) has an exciting leadership opportunity for an Associate General Counsel (AGC) within our Commercial Law team. Reporting to the Executive Lead, Legal and Privacy, the AGC will bring proven practice expertise in Commercial law to support the growing, progressive and evolving service delivery in Alberta’s health system. The AGC will bring dynamic communication, problem solving and relationship building skills as they provide crucial risk analysis, and strategic legal support to Health Shared Services, and to the various provincial health agencies and corporations. You will leverage your strategic planning and prioritization experience in the allocation of portfolio resources that align with broader organizational goals and objectives. Crucially, the AGC will rely on their accomplished people management skills in mentoring, performance managing and motivating a team of experienced and driven Legal Counsel and Paralegals in an evolving hybrid work environment. Please note: This position can be based out of Calgary or Edmonton. Health Shared Services (HSS) is a Provincial Health Corporation with over 15,000 employees delivering corporate, non-clinical services and functions to the Alberta health system.

The Associate General Counsel, Commercial law reports directly to the Executive Lead, Legal and Privacy and works directly with Senior Leaders, Executives, Boards and committees of Health Shared Services and various provincial health agencies and corporations. The position provides advice on highly complex matters and works independently in making significant decisions respecting allocation of risk in corporate and commercial law contexts. Experience in public procurement and leading corporate commercial transactions is preferred. This AGC position is responsible for the provisioning and oversight of corporate and commercial legal services across all Health Shared Services departments as well as the various provincial health agencies and corporations. The AGC is also accountable for the administration and management of the Commercial Law department that resides under the broader Program/Department of Legal and Privacy with a team of 21. Major accountabilities will span the following: Legal leadership and advice to health system departments and executive leadership, Commercial law department leadership, contributing to HSS and Legal & Privacy strategic plans and priorities.

As the successful candidate, you posses a law degree from an accredited university, are eligible or licensed to practice law in Alberta and are a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta. With a minimum of 10 years of legal practice experience in the area of corporate and commercial law, you have expertise applying legislation as well as expertise in areas related to contracted service providers and managing legal issues with commercial contracts. Additionally, you have experience leading and supervising teams of legal counsel and support staff.

Public sector experience is required. With demonstrated leadership abilities, including comfort with decision-making and exercising sound judgement, you have experience providing expert counsel to senior organizational leaders. Your communication skills demonstrate your ability to influence, negotiate, and mediate resolutions to complex situations, and you have experience communicating effectively with a wide variety of audiences including internal and external stakeholders. You have experience working with government ministries, elected officials, and the media. Along with your excellent ability to develop or support organization strategy and planning, you possess experience in leading strategic initiatives and managing change to achieve positive results. As an advisor to several organizations, you have demonstrated ability to foster partnerships to achieve organizational goals, and model innovation and creativity.

Experience in a healthcare organization is preferred.
