5W (Combined Medicine/Surgery) is recruiting for an Assistant Head Nurse. As the AHN, you will play a key leadership role in supporting clinical operations, mentoring staff, and ensuring safe, high-quality patient care. Working in collaboration with the Unit Manager, CNE, and interdisciplinary team, you will help lead day to day operations of the unit, including staffing coordination, workflow optimization, patient flow, quality improvement initiatives, and accreditation readiness. To be successful in this position, you will combine strong clinical expertise with leadership development to contribute to our patient-centered medical/surgical program. Commitment to safety, efficiency, a solution-focused team environment, and continuous improvement through evidence-based practice is required. This is an excellent opportunity for a medical surgical nurse leader who is passionate about mentorship, operational excellence, and the delivery of high-quality patient care.

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Minimum of 5 years of inpatient surgical experience within the last 7 years. Recent experience as an Assistant Head Nurse, or charge nurse. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team. Advanced problem-solving and communication skills that promote respect, a positive team environment, and patient centered care. Ability to meet the physical demands of the job - lifting, transferring, standing for long periods. Ability to work in a busy, noisy environment and prioritize competing demands.

Leadership experience and completion of change management and leadership training. Experience in pre- and post-operative in-patient workflows; staff scheduling and bed placement; quality improvement & patient safety initiatives. Experience supporting Accreditation Canada standards and survey readiness.
