Description
As a Nurse Specialized in Wound, Ostomy & Continence (NSWOC), you will deliver expert wound, ostomy, and continence care to patients, families, and communities across the continuum of care, including acute care, community settings, supportive living, and long‑term care. Your practice will reflect a commitment to safety, evidence‑based care, and the holistic well‑being of those you serve. In this role, you will apply advanced nursing knowledge and clinical judgment through comprehensive assessment, critical thinking, problem solving, and informed decision making. You will educate, counsel, and advocate for patients and families, supporting their understanding and management of complex care needs. As a clinical leader, you will promote integrated, patient‑ and family‑centered care aligned with the values and vision of ALA. You will provide front‑line consultation and clinical expertise related to wound, ostomy, continence, and skin health, while also supporting staff education and capacity building. Reporting to the North Zone Manager, you will work within a remotely centralized team of NSWOCs, collaborating with interdisciplinary partners to ensure coordinated, high‑quality care across the lifespan. Your practice will demonstrate excellence in clinical care, health promotion, and collaborative leadership, contributing to safe, consistent, and compassionate service delivery for all clients and families. This position supports clients in the North Zone, located out of Fort McMurray, Alberta. This position includes virtual work and in-person client consultations. Travel (of up to 2 hours) is required. In addition to a competitive rate of pay, ALA currently has a Fort McMurray Allowance in place to an annual maximum of $12,480. This allowance is non-pensionable & is payable on an hourly basis for all hours paid at the basic rate of pay.
As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Minimum five (5) years’ within the last seven (7) years’ nursing experience. Minimum two (2) years’ within the last five (5) years’ wound and ostomy experience. Wound, Ostomy and Continence Institute certified WOCC (C ). Competent with MS Office Suite, TEAMs, ZOOM, and Tele-health. Able to work independently in different environments (weather conditions). Must be physically capable of carrying approx. 25-30lbs.
Masters in Nursing. Canadian Nursing Association certified Wound, Ostomy and Continence NSWOC (C ). Assisted Aids to Daily Living (AADL) authorizer. Experience in at least two (2) care sectors. Experience in program planning, interdisciplinary practice, and research activities. Previous experience with providing adult education.
