Assistant Head Nurse - Intake Coordinator

Reporting to the manager, you are collaborating with the psychiatrists of the SMHP program to decipher appropriateness of admission, rule out medical contributors to ensure they are medically stable or if further investigations are required. Ensuring all relevant information is organized for the psychiatrists for review. Complete admission in Connect Care upon client arrival. Liaising with community physicians and health care professionals to determine most appropriate resources to support clients with complex mental health symptoms. Displays critical thinking skills to triage clients on waitlist to determine which one is more urgent and needs to be prioritized. Will require extensive knowledge on certification process to support and educate clients/families/agents/physicians on mental health act and admission process. Working with all 5 units of the SMHP, both mood/thought disorder units and dementia units, to ensure clients are appropriate for their units and understanding acuity and bed management. Able to display organization skills to appropriately manage significant call volume and requests for admission. You are also lead to the central zone Seniors Outreach team, supporting 22 nurses, and require extensive knowledge regarding their program to assist with recommendations for complex cases, and determine need to escalate referrals to the Seniors Outreach Liaison. Is responsible for coordinating Seniors Outreach Intake meetings with staff and psychiatrists. Knowledge on other community resources are required such as RPACT, and CCMHBI Telepsychiatry Services to appropriately support and refer clients in our goal for patient centered care. As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Minimum six years of recent mental health experience in the past ten years. Training in Connect Care, and Nursing experience working with the Senior Population. Able to explain the differences between the five units in the Seniors Mental Health Program and the differences between the other two programs at the site. Displays knowledge of services in Community Addiction and Mental Health Clinics. High level knowledge regarding mental health act application, CTO legislation, certification, and designated facility assessment. Displays extensive knowledge about telepsychiatry services, RPACT, PCN supports, and Seniors Outreach Team. Able to explain differences between Personal Directives, EPOA’s, Public Guardianship and Agents.
