What is the Opportunity?
As part of an alliance agreement Aecon Nuclear has been awarded a contract with Ontario Power Generation to support the Darlington New Nuclear Project (DNNP, SMRX Project). Aecon in conjunction with their main construction partner Kiewit will support the validation phase design, procurement, site preparation and Construction of the Unit 1 Small Modular Reactor at the Darlington site.
Linked to the management and coordination of the day-to-day on-site activities, the project is to establish a Construction Control Center (CCC) which shall serve as the centralized hub coordinating site wide construction activities, so ensuring suitable levels of work oversight, schedule adherence and efficient decision making aligned to safe delivery of the in-field project execution.
Reporting directly and to Construction Director, the Work Coordination Manager will be responsible for overseeing and implementing a system to manage work activities through the CCC, ensuring alignment to the defined works schedule, adherence to safety procedures, regulatory compliance, and efficient work processes through defined and standardized work control procedures. This to include monitoring compliance and coordinating with various work teams to identify and mitigate risks associated with work execution and logistics on the project, including but not limited to co-ordination of heavy construction plant and equipment, people and traffic management, management of conflicting day to day priorities.
What Youll Do Here:
Work Coordination manager primary responsibilities shall be for day-to day oversight of in the field site activities, prioritizing work execution against the project schedule, through the deployment of the Construction Control Center, overseeing a team with key responsibilities covering the following areas of work control and oversight:
Work Oversight & Coordination
- Provides centralized coordination of all work activities across the site.
- Ensures execution is driven by project priorities and critical path milestones.
- Aligns daily, weekly, and 12-week lookahead planning with field execution.
- Owns daily and weekly schedule progress tracking to ensure execution remains on track.
- Manages minor deviations from the approved P6 schedule that do not have impact to complete dates.
- Manages shared resources, equipment and tooling.
- Escalation process for schedule deviations and resource allocation conflicts.
High-Hazard Activity & Permit Control
- Central oversight for all high-hazard activities (ex. Hot Work, Critical Lifting, Traffic Management & Exclusion Zones, Confined Space Entry, and Heavy Equipment Operations & Crane Coordination)
- Manages site-wide permit control, ensuring all Permits to Work (PTW) are authorized based on plant status and workface interfaces.
Daily Execution Management Tasks
- Finalizes the Plan of the Day (PLOD) and identifies key interfaces or required adjustments.
- Assesses progress and proactively resolves emerging issues.
- Updates on completed work and confirms the Plan of the Following Shift linked to daily Plan of the Week (PLOW) scheduling.
Communication & Digital Integration
- Real-time visibility of execution progress through digital dashboards.
- PLOD/PLOW schedule board: Updated daily and accessible digitally across the project.
- Review weekly 4, 8, 12-Week Lookahead Boards to track schedule adherence and progress.
- Issue Tracking Board.
- Maintain transit route and access updates with real-time changes to site access, road closures, and material flow routes available digitally.
- Ensuring all site visitors report to CCC prior to site entry for pre-job briefing and authorization.
- Establish a culture of continuous improvement by identifying new practices that will contribute to the overall effectiveness of the project.
What You Bring to the Team:
- Minimum 10 years supervisory experience in a site co-ordination capacity across multi-disciplines with specific reference to construction industry.
- Demonstratable leadership capabilities, able to manage and motivate a team and monitor performance.
- Experienced in the use and deployment of work control processes and procedures, including but not limited to permit-to-work applications.
- Experience in the nuclear construction or similar regulated industry.
- Experience in the deployment of continuous improvement and the use of process improvement methodologies.
- Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with demonstrable collaborative working experience and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Have an understanding in design and construction requirements.
- Demonstratable strong coordination and organization skills.
- Advanced ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written, with all internal organization departments, Alliance partners, subcontractors, and regulatory authorities.
- Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications and use of SharePoint and project databases.
