Office of the PHO (OPHO) affirms the inherent rights of Indigenous peoples and is committed to true reconciliation. The OPHO works in meaningful partnership with Indigenous peoples to arrest systemic white supremacy and Indigenous specific racism and advance Indigenous health and wellness. The OPHO has partnerships with the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) and Métis Nation BC (MNBC) to pursue collaborative projects and develop reports on Indigenous health, wellness, and determinants of health. The OPHO’s relationships are grounded in principles of self-determination, respect, reciprocal accountability, cultural safety, cultural humility and two-eyed seeing.

The Population Health Surveillance and Epidemiology Branch within the OPHO is responsible for applying advanced statistical and epidemiological methods to monitor the trends in population health and health inequalities in the province. Under the direction of the Provincial Epidemiologist and Executive Director, the Director will supervise the epidemiology team within the Branch in managing population health surveillance programs and epidemiological research projects.

Job Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or Doctorate degree in population and public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, or other relevant fields;
  • 5 years of *related experience;
  • 3 years experience in a supervisory/management position.

*Related experience must include:

  • Experience in epidemiological research design and proposal development.
  • Experience in managing population health surveillance and epidemiological research projects.
  • Experience in quantitative data analysis using large administrative health data sets, primarily in the Canadian healthcare system.
  • Experience in using analytical software (e.g. Stata, R, and/or Python, etc.).
  • Good record of publishing epidemiology research papers.


Preference will be given to applicants who:

  • Self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Métis or Inuit).


Preference may be given to applicants who:

  • Hold a Doctorate degree in epidemiology or in population and public health with a concentration on epidemiology.
