Experior Financial Group relies on Advisors to grow. Trained recruits then target middle-class families, a market that the general agent based in Guelph, Ontario, feels is under-serviced. Medium-sized general agent, Experior Financial Group has 10 employees, 400 advisers, of which nearly 300 place at least five policies a year. All consultants represent Experior exclusively. The customers belong to them, however. They can become owners of their office, even take shares in the company. The Guelph General Agent operates nine offices, including two associate general agents, one in Ontario and the other in British Columbia. Determined to target the under-insured middle-class market, he has signed seven direct distribution contracts with insurance companies, in addition to other specialized players. Founder and CEO, Jamie Prickett, shares the leadership of his company with his wife and president, Lee-Ann Prickett, whom he says he has met in the industry. Mr. Prickett incorporated Experior Financial Group in 2014. He has 16 years in the industry. His spouse counts 10. 400 consultants recruited in 3 and a half years In an interview with Insurance Journal with Chief Operating Officer Shelden Smollan, Prickett talked about his role model, which attracts newcomers and makes them successful advisers. "Recruiting is our strength. We have grown to 400 advisors in three and a half years. Our success comes from the culture we have created. We have developed a unique offer to advisors, which has attracted many. We have acquired two other general agents so far because they liked how we planned our future growth, "he said. Experior Financial Group began with one idea in mind: to build the largest team of successful advisors in the country, providing them with support and opportunities to become an entrepreneur. "We focus on advisors who want to be successful and start their own business," says Prickett. We teach them and help them succeed, through weekly leadership trainings, including several on webinars. " Rookie-Senior Tandem The advisers work as a team. Placed in tandem, the newcomer learns from a more experienced advisor. When it reaches a sufficient degree of success, it can either open an Experior office, or become executive director, which corresponds to the status of Associate General Agent (AGA). "You own your customers, you can become an office owner and even have shares in the company when you're executive director, and you open a branch. To my knowledge, no other general agent is going that far, "says Prickett. Mr. Prickett also says he offers a succession program that allows the advisor who wants to sell his clientele to Experior, to receive compensation that corresponds to 75% of his current insurance and investment. "We pay this compensation directly to the advisor for a period of 10 years," he revealed. The founder of Experior Financial Group compares his firm with a captive network agency. "We offer the support of a captive network agency with all the flexibility of taking a stake in a general agent. It must be remembered that the captive network has produced some of the greatest advisors because of their training and protocol. When counselors are too independent, they sell on their own and learn alone, "says Prickett. This approach also convinced Shelden Smollan to join Experior eight months ago. Active in the industry for more than 40 years, he previously worked in business development with the independent network for Assumption Life. Success brings success » When Mr. Smollan met with Mr. Prickett for the establishment of a general agent contract, he realized that he had never seen such a model before. "Counselors are involved in meetings and work as a team, each one sharing with the other. Success brings success, "he says. According to him, this model regulates the recruitment problems experienced by other general agents. "We are turning new entrants into the industry into successful advisors, who in turn are hiring others. They build a team under them, "he said. Experior Financial Group does not close the door to acquisitions. Of the nine offices, three are the result of acquisition. However, Mr. Smollan insists that the strength of the general agent lies in organic growth. "I do not believe that the success of our industry will come only from raiding between general agents. The growth will not come from a counselor who passes from one to another, but new blood. Entrepreneurs wanted

Experior Financial Group is a midsized MGA with 10 employees and 400 advisors, nearly 300 of which place at least five policies per year with the firm. All advisors represent Experior exclusively. However the clientele belongs to them, and they may become the owner of their firm, and even acquire a share of the company. The Guelph-based MGA operates nine offices, including two associated general agents, in Ontario and British Columbia.

To target the underinsured middle-class market, it has signed seven direct distribution contracts with insurance companies, and others with specialized players. Founder and CEO Jamie Pricketthelms the business jointly with his spouse, president Lee-Ann Prickett, whom he met in the industry. Prickett incorporated Experior Financial Group in 2014. He has 16 years’ industry experience and his wife 10.

Interviewed by The Insurance and Investment Journal alongside COO Shelden Smollan, Prickett talked about his model, designed with advisors in mind: “Recruiting is one of our strengths. We went to 400 advisors in three and a half years. Our success comes from the culture that we have created. We developed a unique value proposition for advisors, that has attracted many. We’ve acquired two other MGAs so far because they loved the way we have planned for growth in the future.”

Experior Financial Group began with one idea in mind: build the largest team of successful advisors in the country, by providing support and opportunities to become an entrepreneur. “We focus on advisors that want to be successful and create their own business. We teach them and help them become successful through frequent leadership training, often on Webinars.” Advisors work in teams: the newcomer learns from a more experienced colleague.

When advisors achieve a certain milestone, they can open an Experior office and become an executive director, which corresponds to the status of associate general agent (AGA). “You have ownership of your book of business, you can develop ownership of an agency, and we issue shares in the company to our Executive Directors when they open branches,” Prickett says, adding that he knows of no other MGA that goes that far.

Succession program

Jamie Prickett’s firm also offers a succession program that lets advisors who want to sell their book inside of Experior’s business model receive compensation corresponding to 75 per cent of their in force insurance and investment business. “This compensation will be paid directly to the selling advisor over 10 years,” he says.

The Experior Financial Group founder compares the firm to an agency in a career network. “We provide the support of a career agency, with all the flexibility of an MGA. One must not forget that captive agencies produced some of the greatest and most successful advisors, because of the training they offer and the protocol they follow. When advisors are too independent they sell on their own, and try to figure things out on their own,” Prickett explains.

This approach convinced Shelden Smollan to join Experior eight months ago. When Smollan met Prickett to conclude an MGA contract, he discovered a truly unique model, he says. “Advisors being involved in the meeting and working with each other and sharing… Success breeds success,” he says. Smollan has 40 years of industry experience under his belt, including in business development with the independent network at Assumption Life.
