The IT sector is currently experiencing a labour shortage and scarcity both in Quebec and elsewhere. This trend, which has been going on for some time now, should continue insofar as employment in IT also continues to flourish.
Graduates will easily be able to find a job in this sector, and there will never be enough candidates to meet the current needs of employers. This is especially the case for certain professionals such as developers and programmers working in the design of mobile applications, as well as analysts, database administrators and software consultants.
Employers usually require a bachelor’s degree in computer science or another discipline with a concentration in programming. A Diploma of College Studies (DCS) in computer science along with extensive experience in programming can also open the door to a position in this sector. A master’s degree in computer science is a major asset and often provides direct access to positions as analyst and administrator. Depending on the job, employers may also require knowledge of specific languages or particular types of software: databases, operating systems, telecommunications applications, multimedia or intranet and Web site development, etc. Continuous on-the-job training is also vital in all these specializations.
